MR. BERNSTEIN'S EXPECTATIONS FOR GOVERNMENT CLASSES

YOU'LL GIVE ME YOUR BEST EFFORT

I'LL GIVE YOU MY BEST TEACHING

CLASS QUESTIONS (these apply to everyone in the room, including the teacher):

DO I RESPECT MYSELF AND OTHERS in all words, actions, behaviors?

AM I PREPARED with all work, materials, supplies?

DO I PAY ATTENTION to teacher, each other, directions, school rules, and announcements?

PLEASE NOTE CAREFULLY - I EXPECT ALL STUDENTS TO CONSTANTLY IMPROVE THEIR BEHAVIOR. IF YOU MAKE A MISTAKE, TAKE OWNERSHIP AND ADMIT IT. WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES, AND SHOULD APOLOGIZE WHEN WE ARE WRONG. YOU WILL QUICKLY FIND OUT THAT I WILL ASK NOTHING OF YOU THAT I DO NOT EXPECT OF MYSELF.

GRADING POLICY:

I grade on a point system. That is, each assignment is worth a certain number of points. Usually an ordinary homework will be worth 5 pointsfor LSN, and 3-4 points for AP, and will be expected to take you no more than 20 minutes for LSN, somewhat longer for AP. I also give points for having all of your materials and work in class, paying attention and participating. I give points for this on a weekly basis, usually at the rate of about 2 points per day.

EXTRA CREDIT POLICY:

Extra credit assignments are usually not allowed except over major holidays. HOWEVER, as all assignments are graded on a point basis,

extra points are possible on most assignments if

student has done far more work than the assignment required

student has not violated any parameters of the assignment

student demonstrates that s/he has learned beyond my expectations for the assignment

I will also occasionally give a few extra credit points for particular insights/achievements not related to a specific assignment

NOTICE: no single grade will ever be worth more than 20% of a quarter grade.

TIMELINESS: ALL WORK IS EXPECTED TO BE DONE ON TIME

Regular assignments are expected on due date, with grace period of one day if you were out sick on day work was assigned.

HOWEVER: since you can check assignments on this website, I expect students to keep up with the class.

Major projects can be handed in up to 5 days late, with a 10% deduction for each day late.

THEREFORE: if you have a problem, contact me IMMEDIATELY if not sooner -- don't wait until it is too late. Remember, you can use my e-mail, kber@earthlink.net.

My commitment to my students

normally all regular homework will be returned, graded, the next class day : if I can't correct it, you shouldn't have to hand it in

if you do all your work on time, pay attention, and ask for help when you don't understand ....

THE LOWEST GRADE YOU CAN RECEIVE IS A C, REGARDLESS OF YOUR NUMERICAL AVERAGE

Warning: I've only once had to raise a grade because of this guarantee
