INTERESTING ARTICLES IN VARIOUS PUBLICATIONS

THE JULY-AUGUST 1999 edition of Harvard Magazine has a roundtable discussion, held at the Kennedy School, entitled Democracy's Prospects . Including in the roundtable are Mayor Anthony Williams of Washington DC, Richard Darman, former head of OMB under Reagan, Adam Clymer of the New York Times, Joseph Nye, Dean of the Kennedy School, Mary Jo Bane, a former assistant secretary for children and families of the U.S. Department of HHS, and Elaine Kamarck, who among other things has been and still is a close advisor to Vice President Gore. Among issues addressed: can a democracy function if its citizens don't trust their government? What are some of impacts of technology about democratic processes? etc. It is an extended article, but probably well worth reading for those interested in government, political issues and even contemporary American history.
