Gene Loves Jezebel
The Astoria, London

By Lysette Cohen

At lasts, the return of the roaming gypsies after well over a year. And not much has really changed. They’re still peddling an organised shamble of disjointed guitar lines, bum notes and an assortment of cat-like vocals. Opening with ‘Wait And See,’ brothers Mike and Jay happily prance back into the spotlight where they so rightly belong.

The skinny bodies moved easily through the set (marred only by a fault on one of the drums) taken mainly from the last two albums. “Discover’ and ‘House of Dolls’. ‘Gorgeous’ was exactly that and ‘Twenty Killer Hurts’ was a real delight with its soft but sprightly melodies. ‘Heartache,’ ‘Sweetest Thing’ and ‘Desire’ were as full of life as expected, but it was the slower songs that really stood out, especially ‘Every Door,’ which was charmingly juvenescent and plaintively sung by Jay.

This is what pop is all about. The Jezebels provide a colourful disarray of satins, silks, scarves, beads and irrepressible vitality, coupled with being unashamedly flirtatious and truthful. ‘Cos the thing that separates this band from all the others is that they are not afraid to celebrate being themselves – what you get is what you see – and if you don’t like it then don’t join in the party. The last track they played was ‘Worth Waiting For.’ And they most certainly were.
