Gene Loves Jezebel with Flesh For Lulu
The Orpheum Theater, Boston, MA

It was one of those bitter, cold wintery nights that Boston is so famous for when the Jezebels rolled into town. Flesh for Lulu came on the stage and performed with the confidence of a headlining band. Nick Marsh pulls off a great performance that certainly excited the fans, old and new. He hops around the stage with incredible energy and an odd sort of sexuality. The Lulus pulled out all the new songs and hits; “I Go Crazy,” “Postcards from Paradise” among others. For an encore, us older fans were treated something I haven’t heard for a few months; “Seven Hail Mary’s.” Somehow the “I Go Crazy” fans just couldn’t get into this song. To end their set with a bang Nick dove into the audience. This was after he nearly gave the Orpheum security a heart attack by encouraging every one to rush the stage.

Then came Gene Loves Jezebel. They have moved up from the clubs and now have the space to move about, as they should. They’ve added a ramp, which runs from one side of the stage to the other behind Chris Bell, the drummer boy. Michael Aston is free to explore the territory with his cordless microphone and spends much of his time doing this. He runs up and down it, has a vocal / guitar battle with James Stevenson and rolls his body around on it enough to do some damage to the poor girls in the audience.

Michael likes the new space he has been given and he struts his stuff and looks mighty fine doing it. Jay, on the other hand, is still tied down most of the show with his mike and guitar. I’m still wondering does he really play that guitar or is it just for show? His arms are usually in the air and I rarely see him strum it. That’s okay because it looks good.

Jay gets to play on the new ramp during “Every Door” and he abandons his guitar. I think he prefers to be on the ground. The Jezebels whipped through a very tight set without any problem.

This year the lighting has been paid more attention to as well as the setting. The show looks and sounds great and once again proves they are a brilliant live band among other things
