House of Dolls 8/88Gene Loves Jezebel
Guitarist James explains, "We thought it would be more interesting if we played with all those bands like Starship and Uriah Heep. We could've done the Friday, and it would have been all safe, so we thought we'd do the Saturday, show all those dinosaur bands how it should be done. We really wanted to do Donington, you see, but they wouldn't have us!" Do you like any of the acts on your bill? "Bonnie Tyler's quite a good singer, I suppose. Can't say I'm a massive fan. Ummm…Meatloaf's quite funny. Who else is doing it? Uriah Heep, Starship…I HATE Starship, they are my least favorite group, one of my pet hates. I don't know anything about any of the other groups." So are you going to blow all the other acts offstage that day? "Yes! Do birds have beaks?! Everyone who's there Friday will have to stay - we hope they stay anyway 'cos we are gonna need them I'm sure. We have never done a big open air thing like this before." Why's that? "They don't really have massive ones which they do in America. We have really neglected playing here for the past two years. Since Chris Bell rejoined the band 2 years ago we have done like, 16 dates in England which is disgraceful. So we are going to try and rectify that this year. Reading just seemed like a way to get across to a lot of people." Since last November, Gene Loves Jezebel have toured the States, South America and Brazil. Have fun? "Argentina was the best of the lot, which was really great because we were worried about the Falklands, 'God, are they gonna throw bottles at us because we're British', but they didn't, they are lovely people." At the moment, the Jezebels are working on a new record ("Steve Brown's
producing. He did The Cult but we thought we'd give him a second chance")
and that'll be out in January. But cross your fingers, Jezebel fans, for
a proper tour around October.
