ARTS WEEKLY ALTERNATIVE6/16/99By SF I'm sure all you girls out there remember the '80s invasion of bands like Gene Loves Jezebel. Well, they're still around with a new record simply titled VII, on Robinson Records. It's very much the same Gene Loves Jezebel you remember from yesteryear, sounding a bit like The Church at times. The line-up currently consists of Jay Aston on guitar and vocals, James Stevenson on guitar, Peter Rizzo on bass and Joel Patterson on drums. VII contains several different elements of musical styles, but remains
very somber in its content with melodies soothing to the ear. In my opinion,
it has a bit of an American Western feel to it with tracks like "Liquor
Man," "The Goodbye Girl" and "Welcome to LA." But check it out for yourself.
