STRANGE BEDFELLOWS

Hanging out with Gene Loves Jezebel a couple of times up in northern California (Berkeley and Santa Cruz), I formulated a few opinions about the boys; opinions that do not correlate with the generally accepted news concerning their individual attitudes and personalities. Overall, they were a very nice bunch, and except for a few exceptions did not seem to think too much of themselves.

One of the most common misconceptions concerning GLJ is that they have deviant sexual preferences. I did not find the least evidence of this. They all seem rather normal, providing that the drummer’s fascination for girls with a maximum of blonde hair, and a minimum of brains is construed as normal. Jay (the guitarist) seemed to have a definite interest in females, if he could show interest in someone other than himself, but he gets quite sore if his fragile (though large and seemingly sturdy) ego should get bruised. Beyond that, the rest of the band and roadies were very nice, sweet and unassuming, quite a refreshing surprise considering they were constantly inundated by picture-taking, autograph-desiring girls with lust in their eyes.

The most important aspect of GLJ, which I haven’t touched upon and which is more important that their good looks and charm is their music. Well, it’s wonderful. Both shows I witnessed were fantastic, though the band felt they had left much to be desired. In Berkeley, Mike had a sore throat so Jay sang and did quite well at that. They opened for Shriekback, and it was fully worth the classes I missed the next day. In Santa Cruz, GLJ hated the club but put on an excellent show never the less, with Mike back to being his usual self jumping off stage and frolicking with the dancers on the floor. They blew away the small crowd of fans and the bar’s regular clientele who were used to country-western bands.

In conclusion I must say that I truly enjoyed meeting these fellows. A rare chance to know a group of very talented musicians, their music is some of the best and they should definitely be checked out.

EDITORS NOTE: the Jezebels will be in town for two nights in April at the Mason Jar. AGATHA
