Situated high on the mountain ridge above San Rafael de Guatuso in the Province of Alajuela, the finca is in an area that has not been overrun by tourists and development—it is so quiet and tranquil that you can't help but say "Ahhh...." when you are here.

 

This 168 acre farm is located in the Canton of Venado near Santa Lucia about a 3.5 hour drive to either the San Jose or Liberia International airports in a beautiful and as yet undiscovered area of cattle ranches and dairy farms near Venado Caverns. Although the airports are hours away, Neuvo Arenal is only 9 miles to the southwest and La Fortuna is 20 miles to the southeast.

 

Many people still come and go on horseback and 4-wheel drive is a must in this area—but that is what makes it so tranquil!

 

The farm is surrounded by other large farms as cattle ranching is the main endeavor in this area and with green pastures year round—it is a perfect area for raising livestock.

 

The pastures come at a price though and much of the original forest has been cut.  Rancho La Joya Del Sol still has 96 acres of Primary Forest under protection.  This provides a safe haven for many rapidly vanishing birds and wildlife and it also serves as a seed bank for many types of Costa Rican trees that are becoming more scarce by the day as logging continues.

 

This area is starting to see a trickle of visitors as more people are traveling beyond La Fortuna and Lake Arenal to Venado Caverns, Rio Celeste and Cano Negro.

 

There is a well established population of Mennonites in the area with their carefully tended farms and gardens and wonderful cheeses.

 

This farm is not for the less adventurous types - 4-wheel drive or horses are sometimes necessary for the last 2 kilometers (1.25 miles) of road – a fairly easy fix ...and...although there is currently no electric service for 6 kilometers – a quote of $20,000 has been received for constructing a 24,000 watt hydroelectric plant for generating enough electricity on the farm for 2 households and barns with equipment. 

 

The asking price for this farm and the value of the melina timber allows a lot of leeway for covering the cost of improvements.
