This blog is my online peace journal with information and reflection on a variety of peace topics -- personal,
local, global -- as well as peace and justice related links that I find helpful and/or inspiring. For more formal information
on peace, justice and nonviolence, I urge you to explore the webpages of The Fellowship of Reconciliation USA (see FOR), of which I am a member and join our New York Fellowship of Reconciliation (see NYFOR) listserv. Also, check out my alternate Peace Hugs blog as well as my links page.

War is Costly, Peace is Priceless !!! Spend money to help, not hurt,
Today's hot summertime and lessly peopled Union Square NYC peace vigil was blessed by a California angel in the guise of Gabriela
Vidal. As Marianne and Betty Lou held a sign, Sam handed out some information, and I gathered signatures for FORUSA.org'sInvestigate the Torture petition, this lovely young lady cared enough to volunteer to hand out UFPJ flyers for the upcoming September 24-26 DC peace /
anti-Iraq invasion events. We give each other energy, but Gabriela gave us a burst of it! It is heartening, too, to
see that the youth of America are out there trying to make a positive difference for peace and justice. Thanks again, peace
Now, I'm home waiting for the arrival of my Cleveland son Michael Dylan who is on a whirlwind visit to assist his friend and new New York City resident Jamie in bringing items to his new
I attended a great workshop Monday on lobbying our NYC council to ask them to urge Co. Election coordinators to select
paper ballots with electronic scanners (to be precinct counted) over expensive, hackable electronic voting machine (see my
links page). More on this later (soon) -- BUT NOW I am steaming over the passage of the anti-worker/anti-middle class CAFTA
Bill, HR 3045, 217 to 215. There was a lot of political shenanighans going on, no doubt. A few Republicans voted against it
but I am especially upset with the 15 Dems who voted FOR CAFTA. Remember that NAFTA has lost us jobs and
not helped raise the salaries of those in other countries GETTING our jobs. It has been a big failure and we don't need more
of the same. This was my message to those of the 15 (names and contact info below) I have contacted so far: Shame,
shame, shame. NAFTA has failed workers and CAFTA is more of the same. Your vote for CAFTA is a betrayal of the middle class
and a contribution to corporate welfare. We expect better of Democrats. The rich get richer while the middle class founders.
Shame, shame, SHAME.
Mind you, congressional representatives don't make it easy for you to contact them. For
many, you have to enter an area zip+4 code. But if you wish to join me, here's my info on how to contact the SHAMEFUL
UPDATE: one of those "not voting" said he voted NO. Also, when time expired, they illegally kept the vote open. I have
updated the above info and emailed everyone. I urge you to do likewise. Or call them tollfree at the old Senate Office
Building number which goes to the Congressional Switchboard: 877-SOB-USOB
The three year anniversary of the Downing Street Minutes was marked this past Saturday at over 300 events. I joined over
800 folk at the NY Society for Ethical Culture with Democrats.com's Bob Fertik moderating a panel consisting of Hon.
Liz Holtzman, Rep. Maurice Hinchey and Air America Radio's Randi Rhodes. I will revise these notes
later to provide some personal thoughts -- as time and energy allow -- but I wanted to point people to Democrats.com for some great followup and to the important mail form link to post a note to your representative to sign on to Rep. Barbara Lee's Resolution of Inquiry H.Res. 375 requiring
the White House and the State Department to "transmit all information relating to communication with officials of the United
Kingdom between 1/1/02 and 10/16/02, relating to the policy of the United States with respect to Iraq." -- which should
provide more information that will point to the fact stated in the Downing Street Minutes -- and obvious to those of us in
the peace movement -- that the intelligence was "fixed" around the Bush administration's desire to invade Iraq.
I spoke with some Queens folk afterwards to urge their followup and I trust that we will all be in touch with each other.
In the meantime, I hope everyone signs the above form and/or contacts their Congressional representative by phone. The toll
free number to the Congressional Switchboard is 877-SOB-USOB -- 877-762-8762 (Yes, I have used that number to poliitely thank
some reps and senators -- but it is a great memory devise.)
Am I grateful for podcasting? Yes -- it gives me more information but now I'm listening to less music and more info. The good
news is that there is some wonderful stuff out there that I need to share with my peace friends. Thanks to Bobby Kennedy Jr.
and Mike Papantonio 's Ring of Fire radio show, I've learned about some Catholic Workers who protested against the war at a recruitment center, were not
convicted at the state level because they convinced most of the jury that their cause was just and are now being tried at
the FEDERAL level, where the Fed are trying to suppress their just motive. We've got to get the news out about the St. Patrick's Four -- check out their site, sign the petition, and spread the news. Yes, there is still Rove, there is still the Downing Street
Minutes, there is now a ridiculous extremist Supreme Court nominee, but this is important, too.
On a personal note, I got upstate (well not that far up) to Rye to meet with my friends Jenny and Robert Kropf, visiting
from Michigan. I missed Hanah and Jesse Kropf, their great kids, who are leading their own lives and couldn't
come but did get to meet some of the extended family including Rebecca Neufeld and her parents Vonnie and Steven,
and Michael Kropf -- Robert's nephew. Jenny and Robert are quite the healers and I suspect their whole family are graced
with that blessed talent. I certainly had a healing Sunday afternoon. Taking MetroNorth was fun, too. It reminds one how gorgeous
and inviting New York State is. I wanted to get off the train at Pelham. One of these days, between demonstrations, I've got
to get back up there. Some places just speak to the soul, just like some people do. I am grateful for Robert and Jenny Kropf
in my life -- and their whole family. Miss them as neighbors, but just knowing such people are in the world makes the day
brighter. (Sorry I couldn't get there early to honor the memory of Walter Kropf -- so I will do that here. You did
well, Walter. You and Toby did well.)
If you don't read CommonDreams.org, you should, and you can start (or continue) with John Dear, former FOR USA Executive Director's piece-- How to Stop Terrorism. If you prefer to LISTEN to progressive thought, check out the progressive talk radio archives at the White Rose Society. Watch my Peace Hugs blog for more good links to blog and other sites, coming soon.
In the meantime, let's all see how the Karl Rove/Valerie Plame thing goes -- will he get out of it by pleading ignorance?
Karl Rove ignorant, yes -- in many ways, but it this instance most likely devious is more correct.
I woke up early and was inspired to tune in live to The Rachel Maddow Show on Air America Radio (AM 1190) -- another terrific show which can be streamed during the day sans commercials -- but Rachel
piped in on breaking news of terror in London. Once again, violence comes back to haunt us and the spectre of 9/11
Questions arise. Is it the G8 summit (which sadly may stray from its agenda on climate change and making poverty history,
if it indeed is allowed to continue)? Has it do with Netanyahu's presence? Is it aftermath from "winning" the 2012 Olympics?
Speculation is akin to that of 2001, when I gazed at New York's tall buildings as I wondered which one might topple next.
Violence isn't supposed to hit us and our infrastructure, only Iraq and Darfur and less than lily white places. But violence
and killing is wrong, whoever the perpetrator, whatever the reason. Tony Blair is talking about terrorism and killing innocent
people. God forgive us, but we've done that, too. God help the people of London and God help humankind end the vicious cycle
of violence. Enough. Help us heal. Amen.
Quick updates may come from my new Peace Hugs blog found at http://kateannenyc.blogspot.com. I had hoped to joyously announce my new quickly updateable interactive personal/political/peace blog and instead it arrives
in sadness. Now more than ever we need....
As I write this, I am up late, too late, with Munchkin napping at my feet as I listen and watch the rerun of the Live
8 concert at http://aolmusic.com since I didn't get the opportunity Saturday to see it live. Between the Saturday Union Square peace protest, dog and
cat duty, and chores, the wee bit I did catch on Saturday was not enough. My heart was there and I've signed up as one who
wants to "make poverty history" but somehow this late night vigil to feel the energy and
send out more energy is important, even as I admit there is much to do in the morning. Still, every 3 seconds a child dies
and 8 men could and should make a positive difference. Will they listen? Or will there be more promises of money which is
never paid in the some vein as the promises of Bush to support the troops when he doesn't cough up the funds to buy body armour,
only give tax breaks to his wealthy friends while people die in Iraq, in Africa, indeed, even in America.
Make Poverty History. Sing it. Shout it. Make Them LISTEN. If you
haven't signed up, go to one.org for telling Bush and then jump to http://www.live8live.com/list/ to tell them all. Please add YOUR voice. Then catch the reruns of the concerts and/or the songs on
demand at aolmusic.com with a clear(er) conscience. (And remember you should be able to call toll free 877-SOB-USOB and ask for
BUSH to repeat the message.) I'm a little low this Fourth of July -- when low, be positive and ACT.
Now to get some sleep and, if Munchkin cooperates, get to the ten AM protest in Herald Square in support of ending torture.
Shout out poverty AND close the Guantanamo concentration camps!
