Congratulations to your

2004 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Champion...

JIMMIE JOHNSON

JJ celebrates a win at Darlington, and what should be his first championship

What?!? That's right... according to the Karnubawax point system this year's champ is Jimmie Johnson! JJ sewed up the title at Darlington, putting the rest of the field farther than 24 points back - the maximum points possible per race.

Coming in second was Hendrick teammate Jeff Gordon. Rounding out the podium was Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Jimmie Johnson had a stellar season and more than deserved to win this year's title. Of course, this is NASCAR... where the best man doesn't always win. The problems with NASCAR's "mediocrity rules" system are now pretty evident. Go ahead... I DARE you to argue that Busch deserved the title over Jimmie! Only in NASCAR does a guy with 3 wins and 10 top-5's beat out a guy with 8 WINS and 20 TOP-5's!

NASCAR wanted to create drama with The Chase, and they certainly did. But what is drama without justice? Answer: a bad soap opera. JJ was robbed - plain and simple. The record books will list Busch as the winner, but we all know who really won.

My "Best of all worlds" point system owes more to the Formula 1 system, spread out a bit to account for a 43-car field. The points are alotted as follows...

1st place = 20 pts.
2nd place = 15 pts.
3rd place = 10 pts.
4th place = 8 pts
5th place = 7 pts
6th place = 6 pts
7th place = 5 pts
8th place = 4 pts
9th place = 3 pts
10th place = 2 pts
All others finishing on lead lap = 1 pt

The only other points available are

pole position = 2 pts.
most laps led = 2 pts.

In the event that qualifying is rained out, no poins are awarded for the pole.

In the event of a points tie, the driver with the most wins gets the spot. Wins are denoted with an *

THE CHASE...

For the Chase to the Cup, my top 10 drivers had their points reset, with the 10th place driver starting at 200, and going up 5 points per spot. As you can see, it is possible for a chase driver to actually finish the season out of the top 10! Of course, for that to happen, somebody out of the top 10 would have to do EXCEPTIONALLY well!
