Mahtin's page of Boston links
It could be kind of a tourist guide thing.
Or it could be me being all mushy and sentimental about Boston, since I grew up there but have moved away
NEW This page now includes a listing of activist and progressive websites related to Boston! See below!
Boston has a totally great gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and sex-positive community (if it can be said that there is only one). Check out my queer/queer friendly resources in the Boston area.
Please keep in mind: this page is always "under construction." If you can think of any other resources, please email me!
Some stuff that I liked in the Boston area:
I take The MBTA to get around town. I read the comics pages in the Boston Globe every morning, if there's time. I also try to read the comics in The Boston Herald, because they're different from the ones in the Globe.
We talk funny here in the Boston area. Someone wrote an only mildly offensive Guide to Wicked Good English
Stuff to do:
When you're planning on going to the movies or to a concert in the area, check out The Boston Phoenix. Their web site is actually cooler than the paper! Also check out BostonMan to find out what's cool in Beantown. E-guide, lots of events such as movies, bands, etc. in the area. I've never used this, but I didn't eat out much when I was in the area: Boston Restaurant Guide for reviews of restaurants, Menus and Events OnLine, and more! We always had WBZ, especially the radio station, on in my house to find out what weather and traffic and other worldly conditions are like. Some other Boston radio stations are listed at Bostonradio.com
Some other things to do in and around Boston:
- What is there in Boston? Check out Yahoo's Boston site.
- Some Internet mailing lists in the Boston area
- Want to find a job in Massachusetts? Check out my job search links.
- Boston Entertainment and Events Pages (more tourist-oriented, I think)
- TownOnline, an Eastern Massachusetts "community" thing.
- Go shopping for clothes, records, and more at the Garment District in Cambridge (near Kendall on the red line)
- Browse at my favorite bookstore, the The Harvard Bookstore. It feels funny to write that with r's instead of h's in it. I also love the McIntyre and Moore (sp) store in Davis Square, as well as the one near Harvard Square (it's bigger). I haven't yet been to New Words, the women's bookstore in Inman Square, but you should know that it does exist.
- Go to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
- Did you know that we've got a Museum of Bad Art nearby?
- Go to the French Library and Cultural Center
- Go to the movies. There's a guy at Harvard who writes movie reviews of (generally queer-related) films that are showing in the area and posts them on the web. And somewhere else, there's Movies This Weekend. The Brattle Theater in Harvard Square always has cool films. So does the Kendall Theater. And the Coolidge. I recently went to the Harvard Film Archive for the first time. The Museum of Fine Arts also shows cool movies.
- You could swim with Diversified Aquatics. I swam on their team when I was in high school.
- You could go to Pilgrim Pines, a nice Christian Retreat Center on a lake in the woods in New Hampshire. You can even just drive up there and visit for the day. It's near Keene. I went to Camp Squanto there when I was a kid. (nostalgic sniffle)
- Hostelling International's Eastern New England Council
