Flag of Myanmar
In the Fall of 1996, members of the Central Arizona DX Association traveled to the Union of Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) for a large-scale, high profile operation. From November 16th through the 25th of 1996 this team operated from the capital city of Yangon. This effort generated more than 23,000 QSOs and concluded with several single operator, single band entries in the 1996 CQ WW CW Contest, setting a total of four all-time zone 26 records.

Although this operation produced heavy HF activity, the main emphasis was placed on 80 and 160-meters. WA6CDR was able to work 24 stations in North America on top band and 1,220 stations in total, with the great majority being in Europe. K7ZV and N6BT worked thousands of stations on 80-meters with the aid of some prototype Force-12 antennas. One great advantage was the fact that the roof of the hotel was more than 80-feet above the ground and ran East-West. This allowed all of our antennas to be placed facing North for JA, EU and NA. With the inital path North being over water (Inya Lake), signals were often very strong in both directions.

From many perspectives (political, social, operating) the story behind this operation is quite complex and very interesting. The August, 1997 issue of CQ Magazine has a number of facinating details. A video tape of the XZ1N story presented at the 1997 Dayton Hamvention DX Forum will soon be available for loan through the Northern California DX Foundation.
