Flag of Mexico
From 1976 to 1978 I was lucky enough to be able to live in several cities in México. While in the city of Guadalajara, I had the good fortune to meet the Hon. Esteban Vigil-Villaseñor, Canadian Consul for the state of Jalisco. During frequent visits to his home, Esteban very kindly allowed me to operate his station.

Esteban had a full Collins S-line and a lovely tri-band yagi at 70-feet. I was surprised to discover that CW contacts on some bands were not all that common from México. From time to time it was fun to generate some small European pile-ups.

Even though amateur radio is popular in México, there is not yet a well-developed DX community in this country. 40-meters appears to be the band of choice, mostly for domestic contacts. However, it quickly became obvious that the spirit of amteur radio is very much alive in México. Friendship dinners and informal meetings are frequent and there is a dedicated public service core of Mexican radio amateurs who tirelessly support a wide range of activities from weather reporting to coordinating disaster relief to helping with local medical emergencies.

During my time in México, being a guest operator at XE1SV was a great way to keep in touch with family and friends and work some DX at the same time. At times, there was very good propagation to both Europe and Asia from this location. Many thanks Esteban!
