Flag of Finland
In the summer of 1991, I spent some time at the University of Helsinki. With the kind assistance of Norri Kelzenberg (OH2AUM), a staff member at the Finnish Radio Amateur League, I was able to get an OH license and operate as OH2/KF7AY.

During this trip, on behalf of the Central Arizona DX Association, Honorary Lifetime Memberships in the CADXA were presented to the well-known Finnish radio amateurs Carl Ikäheimo (OH6XY) of Korppoo and Tovio Flytkman (OH6RI) of Jyväskylä. A small write-up of this presentation appears in the October, 1991 issue of the Finnish amateur radio journal  Radioamatööri.

Finland has one of the highest  per capita amateur radio populations of any country in the world. And a large percentage of these are DXers. Ask anyone who has been on a DXpedition what percentage of the stations they worked were from the "northern villages." For some reason amateur radio and the Finns go very well together. Aside from having produced OH2BH, one of the best-known DXers ever to handle a pile-up, the Finns are also avid contesters, both at home and abroad. Contest operators like OH2MM are frequently setting standards for the rest of us to follow.

While I was in Helsinki, it was very interesting working the Americas over the pole from Northern Europe. Through my friend Olavi Lehti (OH2BBR) I quickly got to know many Finnish hams with whom I still keep in contact. There is no doubt whatsoever that DX is very much alive and well in Finland, which is a fantastic country for amateur radio. Now if I could only master the Finnish language! Onko täällä ketään joka puhuu englantia?
