Three of us from the Central Arizona DX Association (Mike Bill AA7NO, Warren Hill KF7AY and Tony Rogozinski N7BG) traveled to the capital city of Banjul in October of 1993 to participate in the CQ World-Wide SSB DX Contest. In the multi-single category, we had the third place score for the continent of Africa. |

| In Banjul we were very fortunate to come to know Gary Cohen, C56HG, as well as several other local Gambian operators. The Gambia is a simply wonderful country, with warm and friendly people. Propagation to Europe is fantastic and the east coast of North America was routinely 40 dB/S9! |

| This was my first encounter with the French Novotel hotel chain. These delightful hotels are located throughout the world and they actually welcome DX'ers! For our operation, the hotel manager assigned several of her staff to make sure that we had all the help we needed, including extra power for all our rigs. If ever you travel to an unusual location, look to see if there is a Novotel in that country. Your rigs and antennas will be welcome by an understanding and supportive management. |

| A somewhat unusual aspect of our time in The Gambia was that we were assisted by members of the Gambian army! Our special thanks to Maj. Monguno, Sgt. Ceesay and Lt. Omar for much help so willingly provided. For more details about the C56V contest operation, please see the March/April, 1994 issue of The DX Magazine. |
