The Amateur Radio connection

Repeater building
Jim started his interest in repeaters shortly after getting his license.  He started out tagging along with the owners of a 2 meter repeater on Mt. Wilson when they would work on the repeater.  A couple years later, he got involved with the Hilltop Amateur Mastertie System (HAMS) - a club that had two 440 repeaters.  One had an autopatch and the other had a 2 meter remote base, and later a 10 meter remote base was added to the system.  Jim became one of the primary maintenance people for the group, and also one of the few people who was willing to climb towers.  Later Jim became involved in the Sierra Peak Amateur Radio Klub (SPARK) which had a 440 repeater on Sierra Peak and later on Santiago Peak.
In the late 1980's, Jim became a partner in a 440 repeater that has resided at several different sites, but now resides on Flint Peak which is a hill west on the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.  In the early 1990's Jim got more involved with the Edison Amateur Radio Network which is the amateur radio club of Jim's employer.  During most of the 1990's EARN has been building a network of currently 13 repeaters on the 220 MHz band that has coverage over most of southern California, some of southern Nevada and a little bit of western Arizona.
