About
Massage Therapy
Massage is one of the oldest healing arts known to mankind. The utilization
of tactile stimulation in a therapeutic context has been documented back some 3000 years to the time of ancient Chinese civilization,
and evidence suggests its use dating to prehistoric times. Historical records show that a number of famous ancient Persian,
Greek and Roman physicians included massage in the treatment of disease. Modern western massage was pioneered by a Swedish
gymnastics and fencing instructor in the late 1700’s; hence the most commonly recognized variety of “Swedish massage”.
The skin is the largest organ of the human body, and as such, contains
the largest number of receptors of sensation that travel back along pathways to the brain. This physiological fact gives us
some insight into the body’s response to therapeutic massage. We as humans instinctively and intuitively know that we
should rub a sore or aching muscle. Touch is also a universal expression of caring and compassion which we learn from the
time we are born.
Massage is defined as "the systematic and scientific manipulation of
the soft tissues of the body" but this clinical definition does little to detail the many responses to and benefits of massage.
Simply lying on a comfortable massage table in a safe environment filled with pleasant sounds and aromas encourages a gradual
if not immediate lowering of all of the body’s metabolic rates. The application of massage techniques by a skilled practitioner further promotes the relaxation response to a deeper level
of stress relief. Heart rate slows and blood pressure drops. The flowing movements of Swedish massage promote blood
and lymph flow, encouraging the removal of toxic waste products, decrease pain by releasing endorphins, and increase the oxygen
capacity of the blood. The recovery from injury and the rehabilitation process may be shortened and range of motion improved
or restored. Many people experience the first normalized sleeping patterns in years. Emotional and spiritual healing is
often experienced during sessions. For these reasons, massage is now considered by many to be an integral element in their health care regime.
