JWKC - A Chapter of Missouri Writers Guild
First Pages Example

This is an example of how your first page should look whether you are submitting a single page for the "First Pages" oral critique or a manuscript for the standard written critique. (for manuscript submissions, all subsequent pages can start near the top)

We know it's tempting to try to put more on the first page (trust us - we're writers) but no cheating!

Note:click on the "link" for a pdf file with proper margins and spacing. The side margings in the html version shown below is not accurate.

MY FIRST SHOT AT FAME

By A. Famous Author

From the back of the ballroom I watched with bated breath.  Would I be chosen from the many who waited their fate?  A hand dropped into the file folder as three stern judges looked into the hungry, eager crowd.   Would they speak of publishing – or would they utter those dreaded words “revision?”

A slender white sheet was pulled.  The author would remain anonymous.  Could it be my entry that would be judged next?

A bespectacled editor smiled a wry smile as the facilitator read the first words.  My heart flopped. My stomach dropped.  The fateful pull had, indeed, been my submission.  Not a sound could be heard as the words spilled into the packed audience.
