Summary....May 2000 began with mostly clear skies and average temperatures, then turned cool and wet the first weekend of the month. Cooler than average temperatures continued until mid-month, but things stayed dry from the 8th-14th. Shortly after sunset on the 15th, a cluster of thunderstorms developed over Stanislaus County, bringing the area its third widespread rain event of 1/2 inch or greater in the past six years. A total of .73 inch of rain fell at this station on the 15th, but just 10 miles to the northwest in Modesto, a total of 2.06 inches was recorded. This was only the 8th time since 1887 that more than two inches of rain fell in one day at Modesto. This cool, wet spell was followed by a dramatic warmup, as temperatures reached 100F for the first time this year by the end of that week. The warm weather from the 21st-23rd was accompanied by unusually high (for this area) humidity, as dewpoints rose into the mid to upper 60s on these days. More seasonable temperatures returned by the Memorial Day weekend, and continued through the end of the month.
