Labor Day: Monday, September 4,
2006
I hope you (a COM 304-21 student) are excited about
spending this semester in a class that will emphasize storytelling using the "special" medium of audio.
Remember that your first journal entry/essay is due tomorrow
(Tuesday).
Also, remember to submit the form on the August calendar page, which
you can access below.
QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Here is your first chance this semester to answer a question or two
by e-mail to earn points for your In-Class Group/"Homework" Grade Sheet. As I mentioned in class last week, I am not
requiring you to respond to each week's question(s). But this exercise will be an ongoing option/opportunity for you to add
to your grade and in finding the answers to the questions I pose, hopefully you will explore some audio topics that we wouldn't
otherwise have time to include in our classroom discussions.
First, as mentioned in the course outline (syllabus), Philadelphia
is the sixth largest radio market in the United States. What are the top five U.S. radio markets? Please list the cities in
the correct order from #1 through to #5. (Correct answer is worth three
points.)
Second, the big media "event" this week is Katie Couric's debut as the
first woman to anchor a network evening newscast solo when the "CBS Evening News with Katie Couric" airs tomorrow (Tuesday)
night at 6:30 p.m. Her news job also includes the title "managing editor" and she will be a contributor to CBS' "60 Minutes"
program.
Question: In an August 13th (2006) PARADE magazine interview,
Couric states – even before she begins her anchoring duties – that "I don't know how long I'm going to do this."
She notes that "I may want to write. I may want to work for ..." whom? (Correct answer
is worth two points.)
E-mail me (Jim) the correct answer(s) by 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 7, to earn up to five (5) points
on your grade sheet.
We still have a few things to discuss as we "gear up" for the semester,
and we'll do that this week.
I hope you enjoyed the Labor Day weekend. See you tomorrow.
