Mae Blakeney was the daughter of Mary Naomi Miller and Major Thomas J. Blakeney. She grew up in an atmosphere of privilege; her family had a maid and a nurse to care for the children. Mae had two brothers,
Benjamin and Harry. Mae told her daughters stories about her own childhood. Daughter Kathleen wrote down her memories of these stories. Mae,
with her mother Mary, attended the Chicago World Fair Columbian Exposition in 1892 or '93. She was married at age 26 (March
21, 1896) to furniture designer Edward Moore, who was 40 at that time, and already had one son from a previous marriage. Mae
and Edward lived with their children Carleton, Marjorie and Kathleen in San Francisco until they were forced to leave their
home during the huge fire which followed the 1906 earthquake. They fled the destruction and stayed temporarily with "Aunt
Lizzie" in Oakland (Elizabeth Letitia McIntyre, wife of Mae's uncle Henry Robinson Miller). Mae and Edward later lived in
Santa Cruz and Ben Lomond. The two divorced in 1911, and by 1919 Edward was behind in alimony payment. The title to the home
they shared in Ben Lomond California ("Sunnyside", which had been built by her father-in-law B.P. Moore) was then signed over
to her.
