Morning David,

I would really propose you look at two separate lists. One list of web job
boards would be jobs obtained through an agency (DICE is an excellent
example).

The second list would include jobs direct from the employer. That
second list would include the national and local STC jobs lists, company web
site job lists, and some of the newer Internet sites where companies list
their open jobs.

Personally, after several months of dealing with agencies, I'm going to
stick with the second type of listing. I've had a number of very bad
experiences with agencies. Three agencies set me up with interviews before
calling me to even learn whether I wanted to work at the company with the
open position. I've been sent to interviews where the job was not posted to
a company's web site and the agency did not have information about the job
requirements. One agent, I discovered a week later, cancelled a follow-up
interview because the interviewing company was "dragging their feet and
taking too long". One San Francisco agency insists upon interviewing writers
before sending them on interview. Fine. Except the interview time I was
given was apparently then assigned to someone else, and that agency has
refused to set up another appointment. Yesterday I had a call from yet
another agent with a technical writing position that involved reading
electronic schematics and RF signal work. My resume shows 15 plus years of
software technical writing, no hardware writing, and I have no electronics
background. I'm wondering whether these agents really read the resumes.

Best,

Denise L. Fritch

Make the Job Boards Work for You

Not so long ago you could post your resume to a job board or two, then sit
back and wait for companies to contact you. But these days, with competition
for jobs intense, it pays to know how to make the most of the features that the
big boards offe

That may mean optimizing "search agents" or
understanding how to get your résumé into the
right hands (and keep it out of the wrong ones, like
your employer's). But each site has its strengths --
and its quirks. Our "Insider's Guide to the Job Boards" sizes up four of the biggest.

Insider's Guide to the Job Boards

CareerBuilder

Best for: Breadth of premium services, such as professional résumé writing. The site will create a resume for "experienced mid-career professionals," for example, for $150. A cover letter is $50.

Résumé options: You can post up to five different versions of your résumé so you can target different employers or play up different skills.

Special features: Get daily or weekly e-mail updates on job leads. Save up to five "personal search agents" that allow you to search popular job sites on the Web for jobs with the criteria you specify.

Privacy: Store your résumé for specific job applications only or block up to 20 individual companies from viewing your employer-searchable résumé. This is especially useful if you don't want your current employer finding out that you are looking for a new job.

FlipDog

Best for: Uncovering hidden job postings from company sites.

Résumé options: See how many times your résumé has been viewed by employers and how many times it's come up in employer searches.

Special features: This site uses technology that "crawls" around the Web and links to job openings found on employer Web sites. Each job posting includes a link to information about the company as well as other job openings it may have. Offers "JobHunters," automatic search agents that search for jobs based on the criteria you select. Matching jobs are then e-mailed to you.

Privacy: There are no employer-blocking features unless you classify your search as "passive" or "private." With the passive listing, no identifying information is accessible to employers, but you can accept e-mail contacts from FlipDog.com on behalf of employers. With the "private" setting, your profile information won't appear in searches performed by employers.

HotJobs

Best for: Research and news for specific industries.

Résumé options: You have the option of build an existing résumé or cutting-and-pasting an existing one.

Special features: MyHotJob statistics let you see how many times your résumé has been viewed and how many jobs you've applied for. Registered members get a unique URL that lets people view your résumé on the Web. Other features include industry-specific news for 35 career categories and job search agents that get jobs for you based on criteria such as location, job category, specific companies and more.

Privacy: The "HotBlock" feature lets users block specific companies from finding or viewing your resume.

Monster

Best for: Career advice and international reach.

Résumé options: Create and upload up to five different résumés and cover letters.

Special features: For $7 a month, you can sign up for Monster "premium," which allows you to add graphics to your résumé, save and store up to 25 job listings, and gain access to premium content like self-assessment tools and tutorials. You can create up to five automatic job search agents, and e-mail notifications now include direct links to job postings.

Privacy: Three levels of confidentiality: Active (all contact information, work experience, and references are viewable by employers); Confidential and Active (contact information, present employer, and references are kept private, but your résumé is searchable by employers who can contact you through Monster); and Deactivated (your resume is taken offline so that employers are unable to search for it, but the resume still remains in Monster's database in case you want to send it to an employer or reactivate it in the future).
