| Wednesday June 23rd, we left Squirrel Cove, bound for Von Donop Inlet, on the northwest side of Cortes Island. It is located almost behind Squirrel Cove, but only accessible from the northwest side of the island. In the back cove there is a sign marking the foot path that connects the two coves.
A long 2NM tree-lined inlet welcomed us to this very well protected inner cove, big enough for many boats our size to anchor. On the way in, there is a rock covered by kelp at one of the narrow places in the channel, that one needs to avoid. The rock was marked on our chart, so we knew precisely where it was located. There are also a few little coves to anchor in that one might consider to be "your private cove". We tried crabbing and prawning, but had no luck. We enjoyed exploring the area by dingy however. And while exploring, we came across an oyster bed and couldn't resist taking a few back to the boat and roasting them on the barbeque. We'd heard all the stories about shellfish poisoning, but we cooked the oysters over the flame which killed any bacteria that might have been present, and we're still here to write this. |
