| Thursday July 7th, we raised the anchor on Thetis Island, and headed down the east side of Salt Spring Island, to Ganges Harbour. Ganges is one of our favorite places. We have been there several times in the past years, it is only 4 hours from Blaine, but had always stayed at the Ganges Marina.
This time we anchored-out in the harbor, a very different experience. The 2-mile long harbour faces southeast, right into the prevailing winds, and when the sun rises around 9am, the winds begin to blow up the long harbor, right at Ganges, and doesn't subside until sunset, around 5pm. As a result, we found the anchorage to be windy and bouncy, and our boat consistantly moved around a lot, during the day. Also with the two local marinas, there are a lot of boat wakes in the anchorage, making it even more choppy. At night, it's quite pleasant. Dispite all that, we really LOVE Ganges. It has a great market there, Thrifty Foods, with plenty of fresh locally-grown produce and dairy products. There is a liquor store (for my beer), and several fine eating and drinking establishments, a hardware store, a pet supply store (food, toys and sand for Zeus our boat-cat), and numerous art and grafts shops to explore. And in the summer, on Saturday mornings, there is a fabulous Farmers Market in the park behind town. Oh yes, there is a large City owned and operated dock, and they will give you free moorage during the day to shop and take-on drinking water. We might add that both marinas will allow up to three hours on their docks to do the same. Ganges is a very nice and friendly town. We stayed at anchor in Ganges for two weeks and walked around a lot, and also fished for dungeness crab 24 hours a day. Our freezer was still full of prawns from Desolation Sound, but we made room for crab too!!! Finally, on Wednesday July 21st, we raised the anchor and headed home to Blaine. |
