"Dying to Kill Us," by Robert A. Pape (Op-Ed, Sept. 22), includes important information about terrorist attacks through 2001 but does not reflect newer trends.

Half of the 74 groups currently deemed "terrorist" by the State Department are religious. Of 137 major terrorist incidents in 2002, nearly three-fourths are likely to have involved Islamic groups. At least 188 of 223 suicide attacks since 2001 were undertaken in God's name.

In 1994, only one-fourth of 56 major incidents involved religious groups. In 1997, just 14 of 36 terrorist groups were religious.

More ominously, Islamic jihadi groups are networked in ways that permit "swarming" by many groups homing in on multiple targets, then dispersing to form new swarms.

This is especially prominent since the Iraq war ended. Multiple coordinated suicide attacks across countries and even continents are the adaptive hallmark of Al Qaeda's continued global web-making.

This petrifies democracies but devours its own. Bigger armies and stricter borders can't rend it; drying up popular support for martyrdom may.

SO... why the war the way BUSH is doing it? ... OR who is advising this guy? or why is the mass of America blind to this concept? This war is about Oil and Religion.

Scott Atran's point is we need to reduce or elimate the desire for Martyrdom ... isn't Martyrdom about fighting a greater Evil? What is Evil? Bush's election speaches are implying that the Arab world is a 'Hostile Society' by implication when he said yesterday 'what is Kerry going to do turn them into a beneveloent small business ownership society!?' ... Is Evil black and white? who or what is to say that Bush is not Evil? ... ack... look my point is going farther away from me here. The point is fighting Terrorisim...

We the American people by supporting or by not participating in our Democracy, are creating more Terrorists by ourselves our government being the arrogant rich bully who has no clue how to interact in a world with compassion so a big stick and massive corporate machine is spreading a threat to non American based world view peoples... which is the majority of the world.

Think about, in Islam lending and banking and 'profit' are to the devout, evil. The idea is that by making a profit you are taking advantage of others in a way that does not promote peace and unity.... so thereby the American way is Evil because it appears that the American way is not about comapassion for others history... it is about mass marketing and walmart and Dallas and Dollywood plastic people.

How do we promote PEACE?

America is supposed to be about tolerence for religious differences.

that people did and does not mean tolerence only between methodist baptists adn protestants and catholics! like why does it seem like we the people are loosing our rights as to free speach, freedom to dissent, freedom of choice.. why is the Republican machine allowed it'self to be taken over by the oil family cartel the conservative far right pat fallwell type of arrogant and rediculously disconected 'blue blood'

This election seems to be deepening the leaning towards the jerry falwell type, the dick chenney type, the patrotic battle cry supporting a guy who weasled out of servering himself in time of war and he did not even fulfil his obligation to the guard and he did so not out of not believing in the war then he did it to not risk death aka he is a coward who hides behind the OZ curtain. those of true human principle and compassion need to stand up for our children's sake.

AMERICA was created because people wanted the freedom to live by a religion of thier own choice... not being told we have a choice and the choice is between 'christian-protestent, christian-catholic, christian-baptisit, christian-other' that is not choice.

W: yes you can have anything on the menu

P: but the only thing on the menu is hamburgers?!

W: no that is not true, there are cheeseburgers, chiliburgers, swissburger.....

to win the war on terrorisim

first, it needs to be not a war.. but a peace movement

second, it needs to be not polarized on relgion and that includes christian-islamic and american/capitolist-world/free market

third, this is about war between rich and poor... focus on lessoning the gap between the two.

fourth, world issues need to be addressed before resources are dried up

fifth, this needs to be a peace movement and focus on human equality

sixth, this needs to be about unity of humanity

seventh, this needs to be a peace movement about tolerance for differences

I dissent to this american current path of beligerant behaviour

the world will be safer if we all focus on helping others and giving of ourselves and the world will become more like Hell if we all focus on get rich now and taking from everyone we can

come people, if the current majority IS STILL Christian based, what happened to turn the other cheek and love thy enemy? let us not let our planet slide into another dark ages or series of crusades....

I found this article.... I will post it and a link to it in a minute but..... first; How do YOU search for peace? for inspiration? .. some magazines || Paraboloa Myth tradition and the search for meaning || What is Enlightenment? || Shambhala Budhisim || Bahai Faith || a non partisian site for or covers most of all religions and ethical systems || the Yoga Journal || and then... google... searching in google can be an art to get what you want and or to do random free thought assocaition & deeplinking... which is my favorite as I am a bit of an anti-authority control guy...not quite liking the idea of someone else THINKING and acting out on the belief that THEY know what is best fo others... I say each person with in reason of societal norms needs the freedom to explore and access to all information to research and learn and by EXPERIENCE distill what they find to be truth and constently reasses that and critique there own thought systems... that way, if there is ONE truth... the majority of people will end up there... if there are multiple truths... that will organically show it'self and if there is a 'second coming' how will the zealots see it? someone has to answer the door and interview each candidate now don't you think! ;^)

Hi Tanya - it's necessary for you to let go of a misconception you have, which is like a software error in a computer, that deals with what is called "the gutter ball issue" - a subconscious programming for failure. You have been programmed to believe that you will fail no matter what. That is a false belief. Allow that belief to be released, and put a new one in it's place, just like programming a computer, that works better for you to create what you chose to in life. Also, you have a belief that your self esteem is dependent on others, and that you are unworthy. A good affirmation to say regarding this would be:

"I am the only me there is, and I am unique and wonderful."

I'd say that 4 times a day for the next 3 months. But remember, for any intention or affirmation to work, it must be accompanied by a strong, new, clear emotion. So as you say this, you must feel strongly how that feels to be uniquely special and wonderful, and to revel in being who you are. To love yourself, in other words, and take delight in being yourself.

There is also an issue showing up called "affection that shouldn't be". What that usually means is that where you put your affections is in the wrong place or goes out to the wrong type of person. Often this issue shows up when someone has been abused, as that sexual energy going out toward someone is wrongly placed. However, I did not get abuse showing up for you, but I did get that you have some hate to release and some trauma. "I trust in the Universal Intelligence that created me to bring my desires to me just the right way at the perfect time."

Doing a good detox program for your body and also getting on a better diet would be good for you.

The Jesse and Aurora Mead family homestead in Galway, N.Y., has been added to the State and National Register of Historic Places.

Galway town historian Phyllis Keeler was joined by researchers Lance Mead of
Brandon, Vt., and Lorre Mead of Northville, N.Y., at dedication ceremonies on Sept. 15, 2004. Also attending the festivities were a reporter and photographer of The Daily Gazette of Schenectady, N.Y.

Lance and Lore, members of the Mead Research Group, a far-flung organization studying early American Mead/Meade relationships on website http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Meadresearchers/, met for the first time at the Galway event. They shared the Mead family story with others in the group.

They also discussed a DNA program (noelcaro@aol.com) being used to sort facts from fiction in the family stories that have been passed from generation to generation. There have been more than the inconsistant usage of the "e" in the Mead(e) family stories and through the DNA program some of this is getting sorted out.

The major effort that had been expended in restoring and researching the history of the Galway house by the present owners, Nancy and Bob Goslin (www.thegooseslark.com) had laid the groundwork for the public recognition of the significance of the property. The Goslin's attention to the detail of the original craftsmanship of the house and the amount of restoration they have accomplished has been well appreciated by the local community. At the same time, many in the Mead family are glad to see some of the early Mead history documented and acknowledged.

The house had been the center of family activity for Jesse and Aurora Mead when they raised their four daughters: Francis, Sarah, Harriet and Martha. Jesse's father and mother, Jasper and Elizabeth (Benedict) Mead, moved into a small, attached apartment in the house just before Jasper died in 1830.

Jasper had served with Heath's Wing on the east side of the Hudson during the early days of the Revolutionary War. He became quartermaster and wintered in Valley Forge during the terrible winter of 1776-1777 and the Redding Connecticut encampment (www.ctssar.org/articles/redding_site.htm) and during the equally brutal winter of 1777-1778.

As quartermaster, he was responsible for obtaining supplies for the troops. It was during his trips to the surrounding communities, soliciting food and supplies, that he met Elizabeth. After completing his service in 1780, Jasper had had enough of army life and he and Elizabeth moved with their first born, Jesse, to Rensselaer County in New York.

Jasper's father, Thaddeus Mead, had served with the Connecticut Continental Militia during the French and Indian War and hjad been part of the group that built the fort at what is now the nearby town of Fort Edward, N.Y.

It was the stories of the beautiful lands in this region of the U.S. that motivated many of the Connecticut families to relocate to the area after the war. The cemeteries in Galway and surrounding towns has many monuments to these families.
