Established Canadian artist Julie Oakes gifts "Power Image Series" to Canada.

This series is a Canadian artist's perspective of  9/11, the new American Homeland Security Initiative and the US War on Iraq.

Julie Oakes was completing her second Masters Degree at the New School University in New York city when the World Trade Center was attacked on  September 11, 2001. September 11, Oakes was to have moved into her current studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.  Instead, for the next ten days, as a guest correspondent for the CBC radio in Kelowna, she reported events, as she perceived them, in the traumatized city.

In her new studio "Power Image Series" was born. It started with "Cock Fight."  "Cock Fight" represented the possibility of a cock fight ensuing as a response to the initial act of aggression. "Falling Cock" and "Fox and Cock" came from images of people jumping from the twin towers. "Cock Moving In" was fashioned similar to a plane. "Cock Head" and "Black Cock" are suggestive of power and chaos.

In the summer 2002,Oakes went home to her family's land in central BC where her daughter has Doberman Pinchers that are raised to protect the property. America was also implementing a protectionist policy.  The department of Homeland Security was formed in the United States. Traveling into America became more intimidating, visa requirements were tougher, baggage checks became routine, and extra police were stationed near subways and bridges.

In March 2003, while Oakes was traveling through India, the US declared war on Iraq.  "Hawks Loom Large" was created.

Rather than split up  this significant body of work, Oakes will be facilitating the donation of the following "Power Image Series" paintings. It is her wish that the these paintings will be distributed to most or all of the major public art galleries across Canada.
