AFTER ENDODONTIC TREATMENT IS COMPLETE

The disease that was present inside your tooth has been eliminated, and the tooth has been carefully sealed.  The supporting tissue that may have been injured due to the infected tooth may now begin to heal.

After completion of the treatment, many people do not experience any discomfort.  However, it isn't unusual that the tooth may be slightly tender for several days.  Avoid eating and chewing on the tooth until all of the tenderness is gone. Again, ibuprofen is good for controlling this discomfort.

The tooth opening through which the root canal treatment was performed has been sealed with a temporary filling.  It is hard and may last for many weeks, but it is advisable to arrange with your family dentist to have a final restoration placed on this tooth as soon as possible to protect the tooth against breakage and recontamination of the root canal spaces.  Usually, the endodontically treated tooth has been weakened by previous decay and fillings.  It is often necessary for this tooth to receive additional protection in the form of a cast gold or porcelain crown.   Your family dentist is best qualified to determine how to restore your tooth.

A report and radiograph will be sent to your dentist, informing him/her that treatment has been completed.  In some cases it is advisable to evaluate the progress of the healing of your tooth and surrounding tissues.  If your tooth requires re-examination , you will be given notification to return at the appropriate time.
