Mason-Dixon Rex RBA 2009 Spring Picnic &
Double Show
Hi Rex Fans! Our annual Spring Picnic was
held Saturday, June 13th, at Fleetwood Park, PA, in conjunction with the Mid-Atlantic Harlequin Club. The company
was pleasant despite the rain, however the club members held a heavy heart for the loss of our fellow member, friend, and
former Club Secretary, Judy Weaver.
The MDRRBA paid out $281 in cash prizes
for our Rex Picnic Shows!
The auction was once again led by the Mid-Atlantic
Harlequin Club's Secretary, Larry Wagner - a GREAT BIG THANK YOU to our Rex Donators -
Angela Stoner, Bk/Chocolate JB
Paul & Marianne Becker, Amber JB
Jessica Decker, Black JB
Tonya Shrawder, White JB & Bk/Castor JB
And a GREAT BIG THANKS & CONGRATULATIONS
to our winning bidders, helping to raise $225 for the club-

Thanks to all who attended! The 2010 Picnic
& Double Show will be held at the same place on June 12th.
"Haagen's Nutmeg" (The Reign of the Castor Queen)
by Ben Haagen:
Greetings to all my Mason-Dixon Rex RBA friends on this our 25th anniversary
… I have recently been asked to share a little history on my castor doe who was selected as Best in Show at Lehigh Valley
RBA show A (Hamburg) and Reserve in Show at Berks County RBA. I am truly honored and wish to say a sincere thank you (to each
and every one) for your kind words. Our Mason-Dixon Rex club is truly a very special organization!
First of all, her name is Nutmeg. Skip Becker likes to refer to her as the
"castor queen." She’s a very good natured doe who runs to the front of her pen each day to be petted or to receive an
extra treat.
Nutmeg is out of a broken opal doe (with no grand champion legs) … I
don’t think that she ever placed higher than second. Her father is a broken castor who did quite well on the show table.
Nutmeg was from the second litter out of this broken opal. The first litter from this doe was a litter of three. (Note: The
mother chewed at the ears on this first litter and I ended up selling them at the livestock auction.) I decided to give the
doe one more chance. The next litter of five, produced three brokens and two solids. I sold the brokens as 4-H projects
and was left with a solid castor doe and a solid opal buck. I tattooed them both and later sold the opal buck at auction (poor
undercolor). The castor doe continued to grow but ripped the inside of her ear on wire. At that point, I thought about sending
her to auction as well … but needless to say, I didn’t. Her ear healed and she turned into a real beauty (God’s
creative hand at work!). I started showing her as a junior last October at the Penn State Double Show, where she was named
BOB in both the Central PA RBA show and the Tri-County RBA show. Her winning ways continued. (If you know me … I’m
not accustomed to winning with a castor.) Now that her show time is winding down … I don’t know how she’s
kept her fur in good condition for this long. Nutmeg will be retired after June. I’m certain that she will be happy
to remain at home. As for me, I will be hoping for a future "castor queen."

Added Note: Nutmeg went out on a "high note" … where it all started
last fall. She was named Best of Breed rex in the Tri-County RBA show at Pennsylvania State University. At the end of the
show day (nearly 6:00 p.m.) … she was named RIS (reserve in show)!
