On January 3, 1998, the Save the Cent Campign was born.  Here, in an Internet exclusive, you can relive the moment of the movement's creation.  It started innocently enough, with a conversation on a couple of books that Jason found to be excellent, and Elizabeth exclaiming her want for these books. The rest, as they say, is history. We join the conversation already in progress:

Elizabeth (0:22 EST): Sorry I was soooo adamant... but the books sound so great... if you were me you would have to have them right now, eh??

Jason (0:23): You are the only other person I know besides people who write for Time that uses the word adamant.  You are so cool.

Elizabeth (0:24): Wow... thanks... I did not ever know it was a 10 cent word... I cannot find the cent symbol on my keyboard

Elizabeth (0:25): Are there no cents anymore??

Jason (0:25): I think they removed it to make room for the @ symbol.

Elizabeth (0:25): Oh, like @ is soooo important that they had to get rid of cent?????

Jason (0:26): Personally, I'm not sure why they didn't take the ^ off... I never use that.

Elizabeth (0:27): Like people use ^ all that much... whatever... oh, and this is used all the time by everyday people ~ ... yeah, this too `... what is that except a slanty ' ????

Elizabeth (0:27): How creepy is that??

Jason (0:27): You can still get the cent sign in programs like Word... it's a special character, like the E w/ accent acute (spelling?), but it's not a Net-worthy character for whatever reason.

Elizabeth (0:28): We both wrote dissing the ^ symbol.

Jason (0:29): Then it must be true... That's going on the web site... a campaign to replace the ^ with the cent symbol... "Great rallying cries through the ages."

It's thrilling to see history in action, isn't it?
