150th Anniversary of First Diplomatic Exchanges

     2010 marks the 150th anniversary of the first diploamtic exchange between Japan and the United States. There are numerous commemorative events occuring and some are listed here.
     JSFC's president Harry Sakamaki has been researching this topic and gave a presentation at the Westport Library.
     Townsend Harris was America's first diplomat to serve in Japan and negtiated the 1860 Treaty of Amity and Commerce Between the United States and Japan.  He also founded The City College of New York.
