When I was sick and lay abed,
I had two pillows at my head,
And all my toys beside me lay
To keep me happy all the day.

And sometimes for an hour or so,
I watched my leaden soldiers go,
With different uniforms and drills,
Among the bedclothes, through the hills;

And sometimes sent my ships in fleets
All up and down among the sheets;
Or brought my trees and houses out,
And planted cities all about.

I was the giant great and still
That sits upon the pillow-hill,
And sees before him, dale and plain,
The pleasant land of counterpane.

-Robert Louis Stevenson

J S DIETZ toy soldiers, 54mm in height, are made with tin alloy using the time honored methods of original clay sculpting, hand casting and hand painting. Our figures are unique among toy soldier figures, in that our figures are animated "action" figures in "three demensional" poses. In fact, they will not "fit" in the traditional flat toy soldier boxes. In most of our lines,no two figures are alike and they are not cast as one piece, but are made out of many pieces, which allows us to change positions and poses. For example, our Chasseurs of the Guard Officer, Mounted, is made up of more than thirty different welded and separately cast pieces.Rigorous historical research insures authenticity to satisfy the most discriminating collector. Our current production falls into 3 groups: CULLODEN, 1746; PENINSULAR WAR and BATTLE OF NEW ORLEANS.

J.S. Dietz Toy Soldiers was begun by me in San Diego, California, in 1991. In May of 1997 I moved the entire business and my family to Dunoon, Scotland- the home of my wife's family. In August 1998 I moved my family back to San Diego. I am there now.My time in Europe was well spent in research into Napoleonic military history and Scottish history.

Please follow any of the following LINKS at the bottom of the page for more information about my figures.

That's me on the left. And on the right is PRINCE TUPOUTO, CROWN PRINCE OF TONGA, in my house in Scotland in 1997. He is a good customer, a friend and world class toy soldier collector.

(note- I sometimes put my discontinued figures and the work of other makers on EBAY. Click here for my current Ebay listings.)
