James R. Wygant
Polygraph Examiner
Mr. Wygant has been a licensed polygraph examiner since 1976. Prior to that he worked for five years as an investigator in an Oregon District Attorney's office, and for another five years as an investigator for the Oregon Attorney General. He has a bachelor's degree. He is a full member of the American Polygraph Association (APA) and the Northwest Polygraph Examiners Association (NPEA). He has been certified by the American Polygraph Association for post-conviction sex offender testing. From 2001 through 2008 Mr. Wygant served as a member of the Polygraph Licensing Advisory Committee for the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training. Although Mr. Wygant is now retired, he continues to lecture and publish, and occasionally administers examinations for the Federal Public Defenders Office.

He obtained his original polygraph training at the Backster School in San Diego in 1976. Since then he has obtained more than 1,000 additional hours of training. He has taught new examiners at polygraph schools and has lectured on advanced topics at professional association seminars.
He has conducted over 6,000 examinations, more than 2,500 of those on sexual issues, including about 1,000 examinations of convicted sex offenders. He has also done more than 140 examinations in murder cases. While the majority of his clients have been criminal defense attorneys, he has also done work for law enforcement agencies and parole and probation offices. He has testified as an expert witness in several courts in Oregon and Washington.
