This paper is the result of a study I have done on sanctification. In late 1997, I heard a priesthood member make a statement that sanctification was the result of priesthood and ordinances. I thought that was interesting, and decided to check it out. I realized that I really didn't know exactly what sanctification is or how we obtain it, even though we talk a lot about the subject. At the same time as I was studying this, my mom independently began studying on sanctification, and this was the theme at CPRS for the month of January. I believe the Lord is trying to teach us what we are to do at this time.
The first section is a brief summary of the scriptures on sanctification, which can be used for reference. I organized the scriptures in groups around the questions I had regarding sanctification. After that is a more detailed list with the text of the scriptures (in roughly the same order) and some of my comments on the verse. All verses are from the Inspired Version, RLDS Book of Mormon and Doctrine and Covenants.
In answer to the assertion that priesthood and ordinances are necessary for sanctification, I find mixed answers in the scriptures. Some scriptures support this belief, while others clearly teach that sanctification comes through personal preparation and humility. I believe a true interpretation must include both aspects. You can study the following verses and discern for yourself.
1. What is Sanctification?
Greek (Strong's #37,38) -- to make holy; purify or consecrate; to venerate; from (#40) sacred, morally blameless, ceremonially consecrated; saint

6. Are there different levels of sanctification?
Cov 17:6c-e Those who are sanctified may fall into temptation Heb 10:29 Those who are sanctified may fall away from Christ but, 3Ne 13:52 The Three Nephites were sanctified insomuch that Satan couldn't tempt them Cov 85:8a-b People can ultimately be sanctified by the Law of Christ (celestial), law of mercy (terrestrial), law of justice and judgment (telestial). The "filthy still" are the sons of perdition (Cov 85:27-30), and they can't be sanctified by any of these. Cov 76:4 The sons of perdition are the only ones who have "no forgiveness", "shall not be redeemed", shall not be "saved" Cov 76:4e,7e,r-u Even the Telestial glory shall be "redeemed after the sufferings of His wrath", "redeemed from the Devil", "suffer the wrath of God" (justice), "inherit the mansions which are prepared", and are eventually part of the kingdom which Christ makes "perfected" and "spotless". But they can never come into Celestial glory, "where God and Christ dwell".
See 2Chron 30 for interesting story on sanctification
The king and all Israel kept Passover after a time of apostasy. Some mocked at it, but many humbled themselves and came. God gave them "one heart" to keep the commandment. Priests and Levites sanctified themselves and offered sacrifice, because there were many people who had not sanctified themselves. Many of the people had not "cleansed themselves" according to the law, but they ate the Passover anyway. Hezekiah prayed for them, that the Lord would pardon them that had prepared their hearts, even though they were not "cleansed according to the purification of the sanctuary". The Lord heard and "healed them".
1. Definition of sanctification?
Hebrew (#6942) -- to be, make, pronounce, or observe to be clean, ceremonially or morally; consecrate, dedicate, be holy, purify
Scripture Comments [Eth 1:100] For the Lord said unto me, They shall not go forth unto the Gentiles until the day that they shall repent of their iniquity, and become clean before the Lord; [Eth 1:101] And in that day that they shall exercise faith in me, saith the Lord, even as the Brother of Jared did, that they may become sanctified in me, then will I manifest unto them the things which the Brother of Jared saw, even to the unfolding unto them all my revelations, saith Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Father of the heavens and of the earth, and all things that in them are.
The things that the Brother of Jared saw will come to the Gentiles when they repent and become clean. This appears to be synonymous with exercising faith and becoming sanctified.
All revelations shall be unfolded to those who are sanctified (see Sec 85:18).
[Joel 2:15] Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly; [Joel 2:16] Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children, and those that suck the breasts; let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet.
Sanctify (consecrate) a fast. Sanctify the congregation -- in context, this has to do with preparing them through repentance.
[1 Th 4:3] For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication; [1 Th 4:4] That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honor;
[1 Th 4:5] Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God;
[1 Th 4:6] That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter; because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified.
[1 Th 4:7] For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.
Holiness appears to be synonymous with sanctification. Those who know not God don't know how to possess their vessels in sanctification.
[1 Cor 1:2] Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that is every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours; Are "those that call upon the name of Christ" a different group from the "sanctified ... saints"? Paul is writing to both.
[Sec 85:1b] Behold, this is pleasing unto your Lord, and the angels rejoice over you; the alms of your prayers have come up into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth, and are recorded in the book of the names of the sanctified, even them of the celestial world. The "sanctified" are those of the Celestial kingdom.
Is sanctification the same as perfection (being without sin)?
[Sec 85:20a] ...and sanctify yourselves; [Sec 85:20b] yea, purify your hearts, and cleanse your hands and your feet before me, that I may make you clean;
[Sec 85:20c] that I may testify unto your Father, and your God, and my God, that you are clean from the blood of this wicked generation, that I may fulfill this promise, this great and last promise which I have made unto you, when I will.
Sanctification consists of: 1) purify heart (what we think and feel), 2) cleanse hands (what we do), 3) cleanse feet (where we go), and 4) Christ to make us clean of anything else that's left. When we are clean from the blood of this generation, God can fulfill his promise (of seeing God's face).
[Sec 76:4g] And this is the gospel, the glad tidings which the voice out of the heavens bore record unto us, that he came into the world, even Jesus to be crucified for the world, and to bear the sins of the world, and to sanctify the world, and to cleanse it from all unrighteousness; Part of the gospel is that Jesus came to sanctify the world. Protestant gospel teaches Christ came to bear our sins. But Jesus came to: 1) be crucified, 2) bear sins, 3) sanctify the world, 4) cleanse from unrighteousness. This appears to either be four items (A,B,C,D) or two pairs (A,A,B,B). [Mor 10:30] ...then are ye sanctified in Christ by the grace of God, through the shedding of the blood of Christ, which is in the covenant of the Father, unto the remission of your sins, that ye become holy without spot. A result of sanctification is remission of sins, until we become holy without spot. [Eph 5:25] Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; [Eph 5:26] That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, [Eph 5:27] That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
Christ sanctifies the church so that it will be holy and without blemish [Luke 17:40] And there shall be no unclean thing; for the earth becoming old, even as a garment, having waxed in corruption, wherefore it vanisheth away, and the footstool remaineth sanctified, cleansed from all sin. Sanctified is synonymous with "cleansed from all sin". The earth is referred to as the "footstool".
[Heb 10:14] For by one offering he hath perfected forever them that are sanctified. [Gen 6:62-63] ... be cleansed by blood, even the blood of mine Only Begotten; that ye may be sanctified from all sin ... by the blood ye are sanctified. Sanctification is being cleansed "from all sin" We "sanctify" (venerate) God by our reverence
[2 Ne 8:86] But the Lord of hosts shall be exalted in judgment, and God that is holy shall be sanctified in righteousness. [Jac 3:6] And for this intent, we keep the law of Moses, it pointing our souls to him; and for their cause, it is sanctified unto us, for righteousness, even as it was accounted unto Abraham in the wilderness, to be obedient unto the commands of God, in offering up his son Isaac, which is a similitude of God and his only begotten Son. [2 Ne 9:51] Sanctify the Lord of hosts himself, and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. [2 Ne 11:159] But when he seeth his children, the work of my hands, in the midst of him, they shall sanctify my name, and sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and shall fear the God of Israel. [1 Pet 3:15] But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts; and be ready always to give an answer with meekness and fear to every man that asketh of you a reason for the hope that is in you: 2. Purpose of sanctification
Scripture Comments [Sec 85:4c] Therefore, it must needs be sanctified from all unrighteousness, that it may be prepared for the celestial glory; for after it hath filled the measure of its creation, it shall be crowned with glory, even with the presence of God the Father; [Sec 85:4d] that bodies who are of the celestial kingdom may possess it for ever and ever; for, for this intent was it made and created; and for this intent are they sanctified.
Earth must be sanctified from all unrighteousness in order to be prepared to receive Celestial glory, which is the presence of the Father. People are sanctified for the same reason.
[Sec 85:6b] Wherefore, it [the earth] shall be sanctified; yea, notwithstanding it shall die, it shall be quickened again, and shall abide the power by which it is quickened, and the righteous shall inherit it: [Sec 85:6c] for, notwithstanding they die, they also shall rise again a spiritual body: they who are of a celestial spirit shall receive the same body, which was a natural body: even ye shall receive your bodies, and your glory shall be that glory by which your bodies are quickened.
Earth shall be sanctified and shall abide the power (of the Father) by which it is quickened. People are the same -- they shall abide the power of the Father Who quickens them, because they are Celestial bodies.
[Sec 97:4c-d] Therefore, let your hearts be comforted, for all things shall work together for good to them that walk uprightly, and to the sanctification of the church; for I will raise up unto myself a pure people, that will serve me in righteousness; and all that call on the name of the Lord and keep his commandments, shall be saved. Even so. Amen. God causes all things to work together for good, to the sanctification of the church; because he wishes to raise up a pure people who will serve Him. Purity and service must be a part of sanctification. [Sec 83:3c] Therefore, in the ordinances thereof the power of godliness is manifest; and without the ordinances thereof, and the authority of the priesthood, the power of godliness is not manifest unto men in the flesh; for without this, no man can see the face of God, even the Father, and live. [Sec 83:4a] Now, this Moses plainly taught to the children of Israel in the wilderness, and sought diligently to sanctify his people that they might behold the face of God;
[Sec 83:4b] but they hardened their hearts, and could not endure his presence, therefore, the Lord, in his wrath (for his anger was kindled against them), swore that they should not enter into his rest, while in the wilderness, which rest is the fullness of his glory.
In order to see the face of God, we must have the power of godliness.
Moses taught this, and sought to sanctify his people that they might see the face of God.
Therefore, sanctification must be tied closely with the power of godliness.
In order to receive the power of godliness, it requires the ordinances and the authority of priesthood.
[Sec 85:18b] Therefore, sanctify yourselves that your minds become single to God, and the days will come that you shall see him: for he will unveil his face unto you, and it shall be in his own time, and in his own way, and according to his own will. Results of sanctification include 1) our minds becoming single to God, 2) we shall see Him [Sec 90:1a] Verily, thus saith the Lord, It shall come to pass that every soul who forsaketh his sins and cometh unto me, and calleth on my name, and obeyeth my voice, and keepeth my commandments, shall see my face, and know that I am, and that I am the true light that lighteth every man that cometh into the world; In order to see God's face, we must forsake sins, come unto Christ, call on His name, obey His voice, and keep His commandments. [2 Chr 7:16] For now have I chosen and sanctified this house, that my name may be there forever; and mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually. Sanctified house is able to have God's name (presence) abide there forever. [Exo 19:10] And the Lord said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctify them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their clothes, [Exo 19:14] And Moses went down from the mount unto the people, and sanctified the people; and they washed their clothes.
[Exo 19:22] And let the priests also, which come near to the Lord, sanctify themselves, lest the Lord break forth upon them.
How did Moses sanctify the people? We are not told, but it was done within three days. However, neither the priests nor the people apparently hadn't sufficiently prepared or sanctified themselves.
[Josh 3:5] And Joshua said unto the people, Sanctify yourselves; for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you. Sanctify today as a preparation for tomorrow. Only took one day. [Josh 7:13] Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against tomorrow; for thus saith the Lord God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel; thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you. Priesthood to sanctify the people, they sanctify themselves, as preparation for tomorrow. [Mor 10:29] Yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all ungodliness, ... and love God ... then ... by his grace ye may be perfect in Christ; ... [Mor 10:30] And again, if ye, by the grace of God, are perfect in Christ, and deny not his power, then are ye sanctified in Christ by the grace of God, through the shedding of the blood of Christ, which is in the covenant of the Father, unto the remission of your sins, that ye become holy without spot.
If you are perfect in Christ (by His grace, after coming unto Christ and denying yourselves all ungodliness and loving God), and deny not His power, then are ye sanctified. The purpose of sanctification is remission of sins, until we become holy without spot.
[Exo 28:41] And thou shalt put them upon Aaron thy brother, and his sons with him; and shalt anoint them, and consecrate them, and sanctify them, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office. Aaron and his sons were sanctified by Moses to perform their duties. [1 Chr 15:12] And said unto them, Ye are the chief of the fathers of the Levites; sanctify yourselves, both ye and your brethren, that ye may bring up the ark of the Lord God of Israel unto the place that I have prepared for it. Must be sanctified to bear the vessel of the Lord [Job 1:5] And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually. Job sanctified his children in case they had sinned against God, in order to gain God's favor for them. 3. What sanctifies us?
Sanctified by the blood and body of Christ
Scripture Comments [Heb 9:13] For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh; [Heb 9:14] How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
The blood of Christ will purge our conscience so we can serve God; this is synonymous with sanctification. Blood of bulls ceremonially sanctified the flesh; the blood of Christ sanctifies the spirit.
[Heb 13:12] Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate. [Heb 10:10] By which will we are sanctified through the offering once of the body of Jesus Christ. [Gen 6:62] Even so ye must be born again, into the kingdom of heaven, of water, and of the Spirit, and be cleansed by blood, even the blood of mine Only Begotten; that ye may be sanctified from all sin; and enjoy the words of eternal life in this world, and eternal life in the world to come; even immortal glory. [Gen 6:63] For, by the water ye keep the commandment; by the Spirit ye are justified; and by the blood ye are sanctified.
Sanctification comes by the blood of Christ, after we have kept the commandment and been justified by the Spirit. [Alma 10:3] Therefore they were called after this holy order, and were sanctified, and their garments were washed white, through the blood of the Lamb. [Alma 10:4] Now they, after being sanctified by the Holy Ghost, having their garments made white, being pure and spotless before God, could not look upon sin, save it were with abhorrence;
[Alma 10:5] And there were many, exceeding great many, who were made pure, and entered into the rest of the Lord their God.
[Alma 10:6] And now, my brethren, I would that ye should humble yourselves before God, and bring forth fruit meet for repentance, that ye may also enter into that rest;
Being "sanctified by the blood of the Lamb" is synonymous with being "sanctified by the Holy Ghost", and with being "pure and spotless". Because of being made pure (sanctified), many entered into God's rest.
The requirement for entering the rest (and therefore sanctification) is being humble before God and bring fruit meet for repentance.
Sanctified by the Holy Spirit
[Alma 3:95] Yea, will ye persist in the persecutions of your brethren, who humble themselves, and do walk after the holy order of God, wherewith they have been brought into this church, having been sanctified by the Holy Spirit; and they do bring forth works which are meet for repentance; [3 Ne 12:33] Now this is the commandment, Repent, all ye ends of the earth, and come unto me and be baptized in my name, that ye may be sanctified by the reception of the Holy Ghost, that ye may stand spotless before me at the last day. [3 Ne 12:34] Verily, verily I say unto you, This is my gospel; and ye know the things that ye must do in my church; for the works which ye have seen me do, that shall ye also do;
[3 Ne 12:35] For that which ye have seen me do, even that shall ye do; therefore if ye do these things, blessed are ye, for ye shall be lifted up at the last day.
Repentance, make a covenant, and be baptized brings the gift of the Holy Ghost, which brings sanctification. Sanctification allows us to stand spotless before God (i.e. see His face, enter his rest).
This is the gospel.
If we do what Jesus did, we will be lifted up at the last day (i.e. stand spotless before God)
[Rom 15:16] That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost. [1 Cor 6:11] And such were some of you; but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. [John 17:17] Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth. [John 17:19] And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.
Sanctified through the truth, which is God's word. [Sec 90:4c] The Spirit of truth is of God. I am the Spirit of truth. [Sec 90:4d] ...and no man receiveth a fullness unless he keepeth his commandments.
[Sec 90:4e] He that keepeth his commandments, receiveth truth and light, until he is glorified in truth, and knoweth all things.
[Sec 90:6a] The glory of God is intelligence, or, in other words, light and truth; and light and truth forsaketh that evil one.
Jesus is the Spirit of truth. Truth is complete knowledge of all things.
Light and truth is intelligence, which is the glory of God.
We can't receive light and truth until we keep the commandments.
[Sec 131:1c] In the still small voice which giveth light and understanding to the intelligence of man, exalting the soul and sanctifying the spirit, there came unto me the directing voice of Him whose work we are engaged in. The still, small voice gives light and understanding ("light and truth"; i.e., the glory of God, Sec 90:6a), which exalts the soul and sanctifies the spirit. Sanctify ourselves
[Sec 85:18b] Therefore, sanctify yourselves that your minds become single to God [Sec 108:2a] Wherefore prepare ye, prepare ye, O my people; sanctify yourselves; gather ye together, O ye people of my church... [Sec 108:2b] Go ye out from Babylon. Be ye clean that bear the vessels of the Lord. Call your solemn assemblies, and speak often one to another.
[2 Tim 2:21] If a man therefore purge himself from these [things of dishonor], he shall be a vessel unto honor, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work. [Josh 3:5] And Joshua said unto the people, Sanctify yourselves ... [1 Chr 15:12] And said unto them, Ye are the chief of the fathers of the Levites; sanctify yourselves, both ye and your brethren, that ye may bring up the ark of the Lord God of Israel unto the place that I have prepared for it. Must be sanctified to bear the vessel of the Lord [Josh 7:13] Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against tomorrow... Paradox: Priesthood to sanctify the people, but they sanctify themselves [Lev 20:7] Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy; for I am the Lord your God. [Lev 20:8] And ye shall keep my statutes, and do them; I am the Lord which sanctify you.
Paradox: Sanctify ourselves, but God is the one who sanctifies us. Sanctified by law
[Sec 85:5a] And they who are not sanctified through the law which I have given unto you, even the law of Christ, must inherit another kingdom, even that of a terrestrial kingdom, or that of a telestial kingdom. People who inherit Celestial kingdom are those who have been sanctified by the law of Christ; otherwise, they inherit a lesser glory. [Sec 85:6a] And again, verily I say unto you, The earth abideth the law of a celestial kingdom, for it filleth the measure of its creation, and transgresseth not the law. The Earth abides the celestial law because 1) it fills the measure of its creation and 2) transgresses not the law. It's not enough for us to be sinless; we must do what God has created us for. [Sec 85:8a] And again, verily I say unto you, that which is governed by law, is also preserved by law, and perfected and sanctified by the same. [Sec 85:8b] That which breaketh a law, and abideth not by law, but seeketh to become a law unto itself, and willeth to abide in sin, and altogether abideth in sin, can not be sanctified by law, neither by mercy, justice, or judgment; therefore, they must remain filthy still.
People can be sanctified by: 1) law of Christ, 2) law of mercy, 3) law of justice and judgment. Those who are governed by any of these laws are preserved, perfected, and sanctified by the same law.
Those who are "filthy still" cannot be sanctified by any of these because 1) they break the law, 2) seek to become their own law, 3) desire to sin, and 4) altogether abide in sin.
[Sec 106:2b] And I say unto you, If my people observe not this law, to keep it holy, and by this law sanctify the land of Zion unto me, that my statutes and my judgments may be kept thereon, that it may be most holy, The law of tithing (for Zion and her stakes): gather, be tithed of surplus By observing this law, the land of Zion is sanctified, that God's statutes and judgments may be kept, and that it may be holy.
Sanctified by faith and grace
[Acts 26:18] To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. [Acts 20:32] And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified. [Sec 17:6c-e] and we know, also, that sanctification through the grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, is just and true, to all those who love and serve God with all their mights, minds, and strength; but there is a possibility that man may fall from grace and depart from the living God. Therefore let the church take heed and pray always, lest they fall into temptations; yea, and even let those who are sanctified, take heed also. Sanctification requires: 1) grace of Christ, 2) love and serve God, 3) take heed not to fall into temptation.
Those who are sanctified may fall!
Other things
[1 Tim 4:5] For it [the food] is sanctified by the word of God and prayer. [Jude 1] Jude, the servant of God, called of Jesus Christ, and brother of James; to them who are sanctified of the Father; and preserved in Jesus Christ; [1 Th 5:23] And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Sanctified by God. (refer to verses 15-22? --Rejoice, Pray, give thanks; Prove all things, Abstain from evil) [John 10:36] Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God? The Father sanctified Jesus. [Exo 29:43] And there I will meet with the children of Israel, and the tabernacle shall be sanctified by my glory. God's glory (His presence) sanctified the tabernacle [Eph 5:25] Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; [Eph 5:26] That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, [Eph 5:27] That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
[Mat 23:14] You are fools and blind; for which is the greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? [Mat 23:16] O fools, and blind! For which is the greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?
The temple sanctifies the gold inside it, and the altar sanctifies the gift that is laid on it. [Exo 30:29] And thou shalt sanctify [the ark and other instruments of service], that they may be most holy; whatsoever toucheth them shall be holy. Sanctified objects are "most holy". The sanctified altar sanctifies the things sacrificed on it (Matt 23:14-16)
[Exo 31:13] Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep; for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the Lord that doth sanctify you. Keeping the Sabbath is a sign that God wants to sanctify us. Does that mean that keeping the Sabbath helps us be sanctified?
[Lev 22:9] They shall therefore keep mine ordinance, lest they bear sin for it, and die; therefore, if they profane not mine ordinances, I the Lord will sanctify them. The priesthood will be sanctified if they keep the ordinances. 4. How do we receive sanctification?
Scripture Comments [Sec 36:9b] When shall the blood of the righteous be shed, that all they that mourn may be sanctified, and have eternal life? Compare "they that mourn" with Matt 5:6 and Isa 61:2-3 [Matt 5:6] And again, blessed are they that mourn; for they shall be comforted. Being "comforted" would certainly be accomplished by receiving eternal life. [Isa 61:2-3] To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion; to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified. Jesus' ministry is to comfort those that mourn, that they may have an appointed place in Zion, and be righteous that He will be glorified. [Hel 2:31] Nevertheless, they did fast and pray oft, and did wax stronger and stronger in their humility, and firmer and firmer in the faith of Christ, unto the filling their souls with joy and consolation, yea, even to the purifying and the sanctification of their hearts, which sanctification cometh because of their yielding their hearts unto God. We "mourn" by fasting and praying, which leads to humility and faith, joy and consolation; and to the purifying and sanctification of our hearts. All of this comes by yielding our hearts to God.
[Sec 83:6c] for whoso is faithful unto the obtaining these two priesthoods of which I have spoken, and the magnifying their calling, are sanctified by the Spirit unto the renewing of their bodies: It's not enough to obtain priesthood, but must magnify (make larger) our calling. Then we will be sanctified by the Spirit. [Sec 85:20a] Behold, I will hasten my work in its time; and I give unto you who are the first laborers in this last kingdom, a commandment, that you assemble yourselves together, and organize yourselves, and prepare yourselves; and sanctify yourselves; [Sec 85:20b] yea, purify your hearts, and cleanse your hands and your feet before me, that I may make you clean;
Does this commandment give us an order to sanctification? 1) assemble (solemn assembly), 2) organize, 3) prepare, 4) sanctify
[Sec 129:9c] So be ye encouraged and press on to the consummation designed of God for his people--unity, honor, sanctification, and glory. Amen. The "consummation" includes unity, honor, sanctification, and glory. Are these in a sequential order?
Perfection/sanctification is the result of suffering
[Sec 98:2] Therefore, they must needs be chastened, and tried, even as Abraham, who was commanded to offer up his only son; for all those who will not endure chastening, but deny me, can not be sanctified. Those who can't endure chastening cannot be sanctified. Without sufferings we cannot be made perfect [Heb 11:40]. [Sec 108:6f] And they also of the tribe of Judah, after their pain, shall be sanctified in holiness before the Lord to dwell in his presence day and night for ever and ever. 5. Results of sanctification
Scripture Comments [Sec 39:5b] And inasmuch as they do repent and receive the fullness of my gospel, and become sanctified, I will stay mine hand in judgment; wherefore, go forth, crying with a loud voice, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand; crying, Hosanna! blessed be the name of the most high God. Repentance, receiving the gospel, and being sanctified are requirements for avoiding the judgment of God. [Sec 43:4d] Sanctify yourselves and ye shall be endowed with power, that ye may give even as I have spoken. Endowment is dependent on sanctifying ourselves. [Sec 102:9a] But firstly, let my army become very great, and let it be sanctified before me, that it may become fair as the sun, and clear as the moon, and that her banners may be terrible unto all nations; [Sec 102:10c] There has been a day of calling, but the time has come for a day of choosing; and let those be chosen that are worthy; and it shall be manifest unto my servant, by the voice of the Spirit, those that are chosen, and they shall be sanctified;
[Sec 108:6f] And they also of the tribe of Judah, after their pain, shall be sanctified in holiness before the Lord to dwell in his presence day and night for ever and ever. Result of being sanctified is "to dwell in His presence" -- celestial glory? or at least terrestrial? [Sec 108:11d] And this according to the mind and will of the Lord, who ruleth over all flesh; and unto him that repenteth and sanctifieth himself before the Lord, shall be given eternal life. [Alma 10:4] Now they, after being sanctified by the Holy Ghost... [Alma 10:5] And there were many, exceeding great many, who were made pure, and entered into the rest of the Lord their God.
Because of being made pure (sanctified), many entered into God's rest. [2 Th 2:13] But we are bound to give thanks always to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth; God has chosen us to salvation through sanctification and belief. Protestants want salvation through merely belief.
[1 Pet 1:2] Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ; Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied. We are the "elect" according to God's foreknowledge ("predestination"); through sanctification unto obedience. [Heb 2:11] For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one; for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren, When we are sanctified by him, we become one with him. 6. Different levels of sanctification?
Scripture Comments [Sec 85:8a] And again, verily I say unto you, that which is governed by law, is also preserved by law, and perfected and sanctified by the same.
Those who are "filthy still" cannot be sanctified by any of these.
[Heb 10:29] Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden underfoot the son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? [3 Ne 13:52] Now this change was not equal to that which should take place at the last day; but there was a change wrought upon them, insomuch that Satan could have no power over them, that he could not tempt them, and they were sanctified in the flesh, that they were holy, and that the powers of the earth could not hold them; Three Nephites were sanctified in the flesh to the degree that Satan could have no power over them. 7. Other Scriptures on Sanctification
Scripture Comments [Sec 43:3a] And now, behold, I give unto you a commandment, that when ye are assembled together, ye shall instruct and edify each other, that ye may know how to act and direct my church how to act upon the points of my law and commandments, which I have given; [Sec 43:3b] and thus ye shall become instructed in the law of my church, and be sanctified by that which ye have received, and ye shall bind yourselves to act in all holiness before me, that inasmuch as ye do this, glory shall be added to the kingdom which ye have received. [Sec 43:3c] Inasmuch as ye do it not, it shall be taken; even that which ye have received. [Sec 43:3d] Purge ye out the iniquity which is among you; sanctify yourselves before me, and if ye desire the glories of the kingdom, appoint ye my servant Joseph Smith, Jr., and uphold him before me by the prayer of faith.
1) Assemble together, 2) instruct and edify; thus ye shall be instructed in the law and sanctified by that law. Bind yourselves to act in holiness, and glory is added to the kingdom. (Glory is intelligence, and light and truth -- Sec 90:6a.)
Purge out iniquity and sanctify yourselves.
[Sec 74:1] For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband, else were your children unclean; but now are they holy. Children are sanctified through Jesus' atonement [Sec 74:3d] [Sec 17:22d; Mni 4:4] O God, the eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this bread to the souls of all those who partake of it, that they may eat in remembrance of the body of thy Son, and witness unto thee, O God, the eternal Father, that they are willing to take upon them the name of thy Son, and always remember him and keep his commandments which he has given them, that they may always have his Spirit to be with them. Amen. [Sec 17:23b; Mni 5:3] O God, the eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this wine to the souls of all those who drink of it, that they may do it in remembrance of the blood of thy Son which was shed for them, that they may witness unto thee, O God, the eternal Father, that they do always remember him, that they may have his Spirit to be with them. Amen.
The bread and wine is sanctified to our souls, for what purpose? To help us eat in remembrance of Christ, and witness that we will be willing to fulfill our covenant (and then God will fulfill His part of the covenant).
[2 Ne 10:3] I have commanded my sanctified ones, I have also called my mighty ones, for mine anger is not upon them that rejoice in my highness. [1 Cor 1:30] But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption; Jesus is sanctification to us. [Rom 8:30] Moreover, him whom he did predestinate, him he also called; and him whom he called, him he also sanctified; and him whom he sanctified, him he also glorified. [2 Pet 1:10] Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure; for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall;
[Exo 13:2] Sanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of beast; it is mine. The firstborn were sanctified (consecrated) to God.
