The Secret Place of the Most High
by Ann Collier

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High, who abides in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the Lord, 'My Refuge, and my Fortress, my God, in whom I trust.'" Psalm 91:1, 2

Psalm 91 has long been one of my favorite psalms. Its inspiration to trust God has stirred me many times, however, the Lord provided a living illustration of these words which has etched them deep in my heart.

This is a true story, which started in Indianapolis. I was there for a Christmas visit with my family. It had begun to snow on the way to the airport for my return flight to Dallas. Big, wet clumps of snow were rapidly becoming a snow storm. Once aboard the plane, before taking off, a truck came by and sprayed both of the wings with plenty of de-icer fluid. I had a seat directly above the right wing and was watching with interest, when my attention was caught by a big, oblong droplet of the de-icer fluid on the top of the wing. As the fluid dripped off, this droplet remained, even as we taxied to the runway. "Oh well, the take-off will blow that away", I thought. Having nothing of greater interest to do, I watched the droplet to see when it would go. Down the runway, still there. Nose up and accelerate, still there. Sharp bank to the left, STILL THERE! Now I was really interested. Here was one little droplet of fluid, not solid, not bolted down. It could have been brushed away with my finger, but now we were 10,000 feet up, 200 miles per hour wind roaring by - STILL THERE! ! !

Wingtip I began to go through every law of physics in my mind, I began to wonder if I was dreaming, I expected to see an angel. But all I saw was one contented little droplet, resting on the wing. One hour passed, still there. Two hours passed, still there. Then I noticed where the droplet was sitting. There was a flap on the wing that was very slightly opened up and the droplet had found that secret place behind it, the shelter from all of the wind. When we feel as vulnerable as a little droplet, how precious the secret place of the Most High God becomes to us. There really is a place, nestled close to God, where we know that our life is preserved by the Most High God and we can rest. There may be roaring winds of adversity telling us how bad the situation is, but if we are only still and fully aware of God's almightiness and His vast love, we will say to the Lord, "My Refuge, my Fortress, my God, in whom I trust", then the winds will pass by and we will still be abiding safely in the shadow of the Almighty.
