Not America's Home Place

early progress

I chose America's Home Place to build my house. Do you want to make the same mistake?

There were some problems building the house... that's to be expected. But some of the major problems were unfixable or never fixed correctly.

My main complaint with this house is the flooring throughout. The floor creaks, squeaks, pops, groans, and makes a variety of noises throughout the house.

Click here to hear what the kitchen floor sounds like as I just stand there in front of the sink and shift my weight from one foot to the other without lifting my feet.

After my eleventh month in the house, someone came out to fix these floor noises (one year warranty visit), but within the next year the problems came back to an even greater extent than they previously existed. I've lived in a fifty-year old house that had a quieter floor than this.

It's almost as if the subfloor is not even connected to the floor joists. As I walk through the kitchen, it sounds like you're walking on boards that are just laid down. And the floor is not even. There is one spot where the two 4X8 boards that make up the subfloor do not join evenly, and there is a high spot on the floor which will eventually break through the linoleum. I know there's at least one nail in the floor, because I have to keep knocking it down to keep it from protruding through the linoleum.

The brick work is certainly nothing to be proud of. The wall is not straight all the way around the house. But my main complaint about the bricks is that the mortar is more than one shade, giving a splotchety, sometimes striped, appearance, to the house. The initial brickwork was from the foundation up to the floor level. Later, when the masonry work was continued, the mortar was mixed up to a different shade. It didn't match, but I thought when it all dried up and cured out that it would be the same color. That never happened.

When you choose America's Home Place to build your home, be aware of the quality of workmanship you are getting, and the money it will cost you in the future to fix these problems.
