Odin's Rune Rite 2000

(Adapted from Steve Wilson's "Odin's Rune Rite", 1994; all poetic inclusions from the Havamal Rune Poem, in The Poetic Edda, as translated by Lee M. Hollander, c.1962.)

Note: this rite seems to have much more impact on participants when performed indoors.

Harrow: set up with Gandr, horn or glass, recels-pot, recels of equal parts sage, lavender, mugwort, and cedar tips (this incense combination was a personal discovery of mine, discovered after a year of experimentation); vessels of mead and spring water, and images of Odin are on hand. Two mugs are placed on the outer edge of the harrow. The harrow is draped in a dark blue cloth.

Hallowing: Hammer rite is performed as an opening.Godi/Gythia charges smoking recels with a Galdor of the Ansuz Rune. Starting in the North, and continuing sunwise, the Godi/Gythia galdors a ring of the Elder Futhark Runes projected in a three-dimensional sphere throughout the ritual area. Godi/Gythia then makes three passes with the charged recels to complete the hallowing.

Godi/Gythia then faces North:

INVOCATION: "ODIN! WE INVITE YOU TO MAKE US MORE AWARE OF YOUR PRESENCE HERE TONIGHT. HIGH ONE! RUNE LORD! SPEARLORD ! HANGED GOD! WAYFARER! WISE ONE! HAIL AND WELCOME."

"I WOT THAT I HUNG ON THE WIND-TOSSED TREE

 FOR ALL OF NIGHTS NINE,

WOUNDED BY SPEAR, BESPOKEN TO ODIN,

 BESPOKEN MYSELF TO MYSELF;

NEITHER HORN THEY UPHELD NOR HANDED ME BREAD

 I LOOKED BELOW ME-

 ALOUD I CRIED,

CAUGHT UP THE RUNES, CAUGHT THEM UP WAILING,

THENCE TO THE GROUND FELL AGAIN."

Rune Rite: Godi/Gythia then fills horn with spring water and moves to center of the room.

"EACH STEP OF WISDOM GAINED HAS ITS COSTS. NOTHING IS FREE. THE HAVAMAL WELL STATES THAT A GIFT DEMANDS A GIFT. WE MUST LOOK FIRST WITHIN OURSELVES FOR OUR OWN WISDOM, AND WITHIN OURSELVES WE DECIDE WHAT WE ARE WILLING TO GIVE FOR WISDOM. ODIN ALSO KNEW OF THIS COST, AS HE GAVE UP ONE OF HIS EYES TO THE WELL OF MIMIR IN HIS ENDLESS PURSUIT OF KNOWING."

Godi/Gythia then carries the horn to each participant: "WE NOW STAND AT THE WELL OF MIMIR. WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO GIVE FOR WISDOM?"

After a pause, and the participant's response, Godi offers the participant a drink from the horn.

Godi/Gythia then fills the horn with mead:

"A DRINK I HAD OF THE DEAREST MEAD

GOT FROM OUT OF OF ODROERIR.

ODIN, WE ASK THAT YOU FILL THIS MEAD WITH INSPIRATION."

Godi offers participants a drink from the horn.

Rede: "AT THIS TIME OF YEAR, THE DAYS GROW VERY SHORT. WINTER IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER. WINTER IS A TOUGH TIME, AND BRINGS WITH IT MANY DIFFICULTIES. ODIN, WE LOOK TO YOUR WISDOM TO BLAZE A TRAIL OF SAFETY THROUGH THE COMING DIFFICULTIES, AND ASK THAT YOU SHOW US THE WAY US THROUGH THAT PATH THIS YEAR.

"RUNES WILT THOU FIND, AND RIGHTLY READ

 OF WONDROUS WEIGHT,

 OF MIGHTY MAGIC,

WHICH THAT DYED THE DREAD GOD,

WHICH THAT MADE THE HOLY HOSTS,

 AND WERE ETCHED BY ODIN."

Godi/Gythia then approaches each participant, with a dagger and bowl of runes. With the knife-point at the heart of the participant, the Godi/Gythia asks, "WISDOM DOES HAVE ITS PRICE. KNOWING THE DIFFICULTIES AHEAD CAN SOMETIMES BE VERY PAINFUL. DO YOU WILLINGLY ACCEPT THE PAIN OF KNOWING?" If the answer is no, the participant steps back and relaxes as others take their turn. If the answer is yes, then Godi presents the bowl and lets the participant draw a rune. The rune drawn will be a recurring theme in the life of the participant for the next year.

Horn is again filled with mead. Godi/Gythia speaks: "ODIN, WE HAVE DARED TO SEEK WISDOM AND INSPIRATION, THAT WE MAY BE WARDED THROUGH THE ONCOMING DARKNESS OF WINTER. WE NOW GIVE TO YOU WHAT IS YOURS; OUR EFFORTS, OUR STRUGGLES, AND OUR DEVOTION, SYMBOLIZED BY THE MEAD IN THIS HORN."

Godi/Gythia then pours a libation to Odin,in one of the two glasses.

"HAIL ODIN!"

Godi/Gythia then pours a second libation into the other glass.

"AND HAIL TO YOUR BLOOD BROTHER LOKI! MAY YOUR DRINKS BE ENJOYABLE AND SUSTAINING!"

Closing: Rune ring is taken down. Hammer rite is taken down.

Godi/Gythia speaks: "THIS BLOT IS NOW DONE. MAY IT STRENGTHEN THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE AESIR, VANIR, AND OURSELVES."
