Photos in this folder reflect conditions in early/mid October of 2006, and were contributed by members of the Jordan Lake Watch Air Force.
The large area of extremely muddy, turbid water is Jordan Lake at the mouth of Northeast Creek, east of the Highway 751 bridge. The probable source of the mud can be seen just to the east of the lake -- the intense construction near and/or in the Amberly development. Large areas are stripped of all plant cover. Despite the use of so-called Best Management Practices, the effects of such intense development can be seen in this basin after every rain.
To JLW's knowledge no enforcement measures have yet been taken by authorities of the State, Wake County, Chatham County, or the Town of Cary, all of which have jurisdiction in the general area.
These waters of NE Creek are also currently supporting potentially-harmful Algae Blooms, probably from Euglenoid species. (Samples have been collected, lab confirmation pending.) These blooms can be seen in one of the other folders on this site.
Note that in one photo we can see Mother Nature fighting back, as the West Wind forces a plume of (slightly) cleaner lake water back through the bridge into the embayment!
You will also find in this folder images of effect & likely cause of similarly-severe stormwater pollution of Indian Creek. This short creek enters the Lake to the south of NE Creek, flowing under 751 between New Hope Ch Rd & Mt Pisgah Ch Rd. This creek has been butterscotch for many weeks now. The apparent cause is a fairly small area being graded & filled just up the Creek to the east. Despite the fact that the pollution can be seen clearly from 751, and despite its duration since mid-September or so, to JLW's knowledge no enforcement actions have been taken.
