0verview: Algae Blooms, August 2005

Photos in this folder reflect conditions in August of 2005, and were contributed by members of the Jordan Lake Navy.

The images with 'Jordan Lake' in the file names were taken up the Haw River arm of the lake, a bit north of the mouth of Roberson Creek. A fisherman with inadequate photo equipment and very little daylight was shocked to see not only the green algae on the surface (looking much like the mats of pollen that come in the spring) but also what looked like many acres of the very bubbly stuff, the probable result of 'outgassing' by the little critters as they metabolize. Yuck. Fish were caught that day, but not consumed...

The images with 'Morgan Creek' in the file names were actually from Cub Creek, which is a tributary to the Morgan Creek arm of the lake, just a bit downstream from where Morgan Creek dumps its Chapel Hill nutrients. No Rivers of Outgassing here, just lots of the green & yellow stuff floating on the surface. It all looked very much like what has been authoritatively identified as Euglenoid species during the 2006 outbreaks.
