The City a slow learner?
About 2 years before this Beryl thing, the first & only other, so I have been told, Median Choker in the City, was installed on Auburndale at Tanglewood Street in Linda Vista. Auburndale is almost, for a residential area, a country road. All the houses are located on the side street Tanglewood. So there are no front yards/windows directly across & parallel to the Chokers. Hardly any parked Vehicles either for Vehicles to Zig-Zag around. And with no “Bike Lane” painted line to be seen! But with more, it appears, traffic flow.
With all the College students in the area, wonder how much of a slowing-down challenge it really is? Standing on it at night is not a good feeling!
But what if really odd, Safety
wise, is it would appear, due to this different residential layout, is that
there must be more Left turns at this Choker than at Beryl’s 2 sets. Would not this bring traffic to a stop, or
at high risk of being “REAR-ENDED”, with ones rear “Hanging-out” around the
Choker, while waiting for a break in traffic?
It seems that Left turn lanes
would have been much more practical, useful & far Safer than the Blobs of
Cement in the middle of the roadway now!?
It is painted & signed (Keep Right) similar to Beryl’s but has different placed reflectors. Some were mounted on the sides across the front edge of the Choker, helping at night, I’m sure, to locate the choker. But apparently some have been knocked off by Vehicles still hitting it, one tire mark about 4’ in from the edge.
Is this why there are none on Beryl’s edges, to save maintains/replacement costs?! If so, for shame!
Driving towards Beryl’s Choker at night, it’s surprising, even with the Yellow paint & post mounted reflectors/bear right sign, how difficult is to pick up the shape/edge of it, especially with all the BLACK tire marks acting like CAMOUFLAGE!
And I’m sure, there are Motorist with Eyes (& maybe a couple drinks) worse than mine!
Placing a bigger/glaring street light over the intersection would only make it more difficult seeing the first one on approach!
So with this prior experience, one would think the City would have heard about some accidents, or at least noticed the Black tire marks on the first one, & made an extra effort for the publics safety, to high-light Beryl’s quickly!
But not to be! The City took a “Band-Aid” approach! For about the first month or 2, there was no paint, street lines/reflectors or Bear Right signs. It was bare concrete on a bare concrete roadway! Guess there was a Saw-horse at times & a small post mounted reflector. Then came the Yellow paint around the Choker. Then about a month later came some lines & reflectors. Now last, are the Keep Right signs!
Guess they had to work within the Budget! All the while Vehicles were hitting it so hard they had to be towed away, or tried driving away, endangering/hitting other motorists/pedestrians/property with their non-roadworthy, vehicle! Shameful!
No amount of reflectors would FIX (even a Million wouldn’t stop the Slaloming) Beryl Street’s, but after 6 months you would have though it would be equal to or better that the first one 2 years ago!
Or has the City just plain forgot about what it has learned/done at Auburndale?
Or has the City given up the Concept & not want to waste any more money?
Or doesn’t the City care about the People?
