1984-85 LTD Police
The Police version could be ordered many different ways. Items common to the LX & Police were the 5.0 HO, AOD & HD suspension..
Most were with CFI but a 2V carb could be had in some states.
Color could be the Black and White or any other stock color.
Upholstery could be vinyl or cloth along with rubber or carpet floor mats.
The Speedo was 140 MPH which can be used to replace the LX's 85. But there was no tachometer like the LX had!
Most had a 3 gauge set installed over the glove box. Taxies also had this as an option.
The rear end ratio was 3.08 compared to the LX's 3.27.
The AOD shifter was a normal column mount while the LX got a console mount. Only 4 door Ford I know of to have a console mounted shifter!
My 84 Police still had the 2 spot lights & they were useful in reading street signs at night & useful in controlling others "Road Rage" on the Freeways. In 1990 when the LTD was somewhat new yet, when coming up on slower cars in the Freeways fast lane, they would move out of the way much quicker that when I would be in my 64 Fairlane. (it's a sleeper too with a 5.0 HO, EFI, AOD) Considered putting Spot Lights on the LX but they do cause more air turbulence & noise with the window down, so probably won't do it.
The stock colored and fully optioned Police HO's were often ordered by City and Federal officials. They usually had lower mileage & were driven easier, making great sleepers & it's too bad more are not being saved.
High mileage? Have heard that the LA County Court Police support are still driving these Fox LTD's. Easier to get around in the congested down town area. Will check this out some day.
Found 2 Police car books with 3 pics each of these. Very good write-up on their performance. Mentioned they were the fastest Police cars of 84-85, except for the Mustang of course. Top speed of 123. The books were "FORD Police Cars 1932-1997" & Encyclopedia of American Police Cars", both by Edwin J. Sanow, MBI Publishing.
The complete Build Sheets take too much memory so below are a couple "DSO" sections -
