| CFI | |
| The 5.0 HO CFI (Central Fuel Injection) has 2 injectors mounted on a standard 2V Carburetor intake manifold. It's injectors have the highest flow of any Ford injectors. But their flow of 52 pph (pounds per hr) X 2 only = 104 pph total, while the EFI port injected 86 to 95 is 19 pph X 8 = 152 pph. So there is the first limitation unless you up the fuel pressure, & that won't make it all up or be perfect. | |
| EEC or ECU | |
| The EEC (Electronic Engine Control) or ECU (Electronic Control Unit) has it's limitations it that it has a fixed performance profile that can't be modified. But, we are working on a band-aid that might help some. So you can't improve the Air flow volume too much or it messes up the EEC, (see Heads below) but you can improve the efficiency some. | |
| Improving engine Efficiency | |
| The safest mods are Under Drive Pulleys, K&N Air filters, & Tubular Headers with dual or a single 3" exhaust pipes. With this combo my untouched 140k miles 85 turned 89 mph in the 1/4. Not a engine mod, but also changed the AOD's V8 converter to the 6 cyl one for higher stall. Roller Rockers should also be OK. | |
| New Long Block | |
| At about 150k miles a head gasket blew. Having heard that the 87 to 95 Mustang 5.0 HO long block would work with the CFI system, I got one from a wrecked Mustang with about 60k miles. Installed it & the performance was defiantly improved. Apparently the Roller Cam is defiantly more efficient despite allowing more Air flow. Didn't run this combo at the 1/4 mile, but I'm sure it would have been faster! | |
| New Heads pushed my luck! | |
| Not content to leave well enough alone, I decided to do a valve job. Pocket ported & removed the Exhaust "bump" myself. Then had a 3 angle valve job done. This affected the engine performance but not in the way I had hoped! First the exhaust was louder & I had to add a second inline muffler to my single 3" system. Then the Idle became rough, sounds impressive tho! In spite of a rough Idle, I was able to pass SMOG with some fine tuning. Doesn't like to be "lugged" at low speed, starts jerking, & the overall performance is down a little now. If a EEC aftermarket improvement doesn't come along by next summer (2001), I will probably convert to EFI port injection. Did it to my 64 Fairlane with a 90 5.0 HO & I really like it! | |
