LTD (&/or other similar cars) Possible Problems
Bucking/Lurching during Cruising Most likely the Throttle Position Indicator, TPI, has bad wear spot where it most often is positioned.
Dies when Hot, runs rough after cooling down. The Thick Film Ignition, TFI, Module has failed from years of Heat from being mounted on the side of the Distributor. Always replace with a Factory Ford part, there is a difference.
AOD suddenly begins Shifting poorly or not at all. The Plastic Grommet that attaches the Throttle Valve, TV, Rod to the Throttle Body has disintegrated. DO NOT continue trying to drive! The AOD could be severally damaged in no time!
No Voltage to Fuel Pump(s) Relay. It is powered through a Fuse Link that is attached to the Starter Relay. Wire breaks where it leaves Crimp-Lug. Insulation still holds it together so may still make occasional contact. Cause is probably from vibration, Battery Acid Vapor, & in one case Salt corrosion. On a 1984 LX from the San Francisco area, even the Aluminum Valve Covers, Alternator & Air Conditioning Compressor were corroded. Other small nearby wires could be affected too!
Fails SMOG Test Big Time! May not be the only reason to Fail, but this will Fail you for sure! The Relays mounted on the Drivers Fender Well provide Vacuum to operate the EGO & Air Supply Valve for the Catalytic Converter! The Relays are supplied Vacuum from a common White Plastic Manifold. At the Front end of this Manifold, there is a Plug which can fall out. You will not hear a Vacuum leak "Whistle".
