| ROCKS PANEL PROJECT #050401: Mixed media 12"x 60" x 2" |
THIS is the first of many panel projects I've had in mind for some years. And now that I've completed one, I intend to create
more.
There are unique challenges working in 3 dimensions. I have used a variety of materials in this piece: Masonite, wood,
acyrlic rods and bars, foam and acrylic texture paste to create the rocks and of course acrylic paint. Sand, reflective mylar,
nuts and bolts round out the list.
As I've mentioned, some of my fondest memories are simply walking the beach, looking for rocks that catch my eye for one
reason or another . Jewels if you will. I wanted to create something that represented jewels that lie just under the surface.
The acrylic rods give a sense of water movement and obscure, ever so slightly, a direct view of the rocks beneath.

Each rock is fashioned from foam, sealed with a strong acrylic texture paste, painted, then adhered to the "rear
panel box". The rod assembly and the rear panel box are removable. I don't know why.....it just seemed appropriate
that I should be able to disassemble the piece at will. Though not shown, there is also a pane of glass over the rocks
(easier to keep clean, plus it gives yet one more suggestion of water)
