The Writer
Mildred Emma Regina (Stevens) Johnson, who penned the major portion of this book by hand, was raised in the southwest
part of Los Angeles, California in the early 1900’s. Because her parents
had agreed not to give their children any religious training, Mildred knew little or nothing about God until her sister, Dorothy,
married a Christian man. His family began praying that “Milly,” as
she was affectionately called, would commit her life to Jesus Christ. Their prayers
were answered.
At the threshold of the Great Depression, Mildred
was thrust into the world alone with her young daughter. Though she had studied
fashion design at Woodbury College, she had no experience in her profession, so was forced to take whatever jobs she could
find, such as housekeeping for Hollywood stars, waitress work, and bookkeeping. It
is interesting to note that after an interview with a prominent Los Angeles newspaper, her designs were copied and seen in
one of its editions—no permission granted!
Encouraged by her pastor to enroll in L.I.F.E
Bible College, Los Angeles, California, Mildred was ordained to the ministry and served as pastor, teacher, and evangelist. An avid writer, she composed poetry, authored plays and articles, which were published
in her denomination's periodical, “Foursquare Advance.” Her
artistic talents were used in painting scenery for many of the sacred oratorios written by Aimee Semple McPherson, founder
of Angelus Temple. She also served as makeup artist, costume, and set designer.
Mildred was an extremely sensitive individual, a woman of courage and great strength. Exceptionally talented, she could do anything from writing to beautiful oil paintings
to cement work to preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. For the last 17 years
of her life she served on staff at Angelus Temple, founding church of the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel. She died just after her 61st birthday, leaving a wonderful heritage.
