James CHAPMAN was the son of John CHAPMAN and Nancy WHITEHEAD of Amelia Co., VA.  In 1872, James married Phoebe Elizabeth Pearce and they lived in Amelia and Amherst Counties. VA. About 1799 they migrated to the Lexington, Ky. area, but by 1802 James was in Greenup County, KY.  He operated a tavern there and purchased various tracts of land.  After about 10 years, the family relocated to Scioto Co., OH where he practiced his trade as a silver smith.  With the exception of Reuben, Lucy and Greenup, all of his children either moved west or to Ky.

I found this family particularly interesting because in my search for the ancestors of John CHAPMAN Sr. below, I found that his parents were John & Nancy CHAPMAN from VA.  To date, James’ parents are the only John and Nancy CHAPMAN that I can find in Virginia during that time period.  Additionally, I have a John CHAPMAN, Jr. born about 1795 that was known to his neighbors as Jacky.  This family, John and Nancy, also produced a grandchild named John “Jacky” who was born abt. 1795, and interestingly, we don’t know what happened to him.  Maybe he went to visit his uncle James.
