James and family first appear in the 1830 census of Cabell Co., VA/WV.  Their first child is Wesley b. 1825.

 

We first learn of James being in Mason Co., WV in Deed Book 12, pg. 402 where the county auctioned off the property of Philip More and James Semple.  It was a tract of 6998 acres.  James bought lots 10 & 3 for 3 cents an acre.  It was 546 acres and totaled $16.38. The terms were one forth paid at time of sale and give security for the balance to be paid in 12 months.  The sale was confirmed Apr 1842.  This property was on Little Guyan River in Hannnen Twp, and was bounded by 100 acre tract patented to Jacob Slack and the 359 acres of Thomas Hanan.  The deed was recorded April 1847.
