William was the s/o Richard & Margaret  “Peggy” (ABBOTT) CHAPMAN

BIG SANDY VALLEY by Wm. Ely

In 1806, moved from Giles Co., VA to what is now Lawrence Co., KY, and was followed in 1810 by Wm McClure, who was his son-in-law.  The latter came from Botetourt Co., VA.

His grandson, Lt. George R Chapman, held a patent for land inherited from him and issued by James Monroe, then Gov. on Va.; afterwards president of US.  The patent was issued to David French, who afterwards transferred it to Wm Chapman, dated 19 Apr 1781.  It calls for 4000 Acres of land. The deed from French to Chapman, bearing daye of 1802, calls for 1000 Acres of aforesaid patent.  When patent was issued it was for Kanawha Co., VA this part of Ky then being in that jurisdiction.  This was before Ky. Co. was established. The tract of land embraced in the Chapman purchase from French, now owned by Lt. Chapman, is situated on the west bank of the Sandy, five miles above Louisa and is known as the Garritt Place.

William died in 1840 on the farm.  His wife died 1863 97 years old.

 Lt. Chapman was in the 14th Inf. Ky. Vol. Union Army and most of the family are Republicans.
