Kathryn at Seven Months

1/6/97

Christmas 1996 found Kathryn in wintry Washington State. This was quite a December in Central Washington, with record snowfalls followed by ice and freezing rain. But while the rest of us shoveled roofs and plowed drives, Kathryn spent most of her time cozily indoors, being introduced to the delights of . . . wrapping paper!

She did not understand the concepts of presents -- after all, to little Kathryn, everything you hand her is a present -- but she enjoyed the activity and attention, and the glitter and the tearing.

Kathryn spent the rest of her days eating mightily, gnawing turkey bones and stale bagels (if fresh, she tears them up), playing with toys, sitting up firmly, pulling herself up onto her knees, and rolling herself around the room. We think Kathryn may be crawling soon, and are enjoying our last short period of tranquillity before she does so. It is so nice to know that she will stay approximately where we put her. Progress has its price, we suppose.

Despite the cold, Kathryn did take several long walks in the countryside with her daddy. We wanted to show you some of the beautiful things she saw in the snowy orchards and fields around Tieton, Washington (pop. 900).

Brrr! Enough already, daddy, let's take a hot bath (thinks Kathryn). And so we do.
