Kathryn at Six Months (Part Two)

12/1/96

Kathryn also visited Washington, D.C. where she stayed with her grandmother Jane and toured the National Gallery of Art and the Supreme Court.

On this trip Kathryn got her first two little teeth and started eating baby cereal and mushed bananas.

She also went from slumping to sitting up more or less straight, and started rolling over all the way. In restaurants she sat in high chairs and gnawed bagels and breadsticks, and she began saying "da da" and trying to wave back to people. On long drives she could amuse herself -- for a while -- messily sucking the juice out of small oranges.

Kathryn's great-grandparents enjoyed her greatly. Her stepsister Cecilia wrote this about great-grandmother's conversations with Kathryn:

The great-grandmother
has held many babies
on two continents.
She wields her bottle of pills
like a rattle
shakes it at the baby.
"Smile!
Smile, happy girl.
Happy girl.
Always smile.
Always be happy."
It was less a description
than a benediction.

And what did Kathryn think of all this? She thought the past month was very interesting and quite amusing.
