Parish of Lye

William1 HARVEY's birthplace is Parish of Lye, Worcestershire, England. The previous team #1 outline descendancy tree showed Lyd.

On 11 Feb 1998, Louise James wrote: My atlas of England shows a Lydd, Lydden and Lydd-on-Sea in Kent. This is nowhere near Worcestershire. However, there is a Lye in Worcestershire. This is confirmed in Bartholemew's Gazeteer of England. I therefore concluded that somewhere along the line, a typo was made and the information was incorrectly submitted as Lyd. Since I started doing research, someone else must have come to the same conclusion as the most recent Ancestral File (which arrived last year in the FHC I use) now shows William (1)'s birthplace as 5 Nov 1678 in Lye, Worcestershire. I'm assuming the difference in dates has to do with the Quaker dating system.

According to the John Mahlon HARVEY's Edna (Davis) Harvey typescript: William Harvey born 5th 9mo 1678 [05 Nov 1678] Parish of Lye in Worcestershire, England.

Quaker Dates and the British Adoption of the Gregorian Calendar

The British part of the world adopted the Gregorian calendar at the end of 1752 and the beginning of 1753. New Years Day 1753 was January 1 for the first time. Previously, New Years Day occurred on March 25. Therefore, 1752 started on March 25 and ended on December 31, a very short year. A nine month and 7 day year you say. Well not quite. The Julian calendar was eleven days off. We had been having leap year every four years including the end of each century. The seasons were occurring earlier in the calendar year than they had at the time of the original Easter. Synchronizing the celebration of Easter was the reason for Pope Gregory's concern. Therefore, the day following 02 Sep 1752 was 14 Sep 1752. September 3 through 13, 1752 never existed in the British Empire. Except in Scotland! But that's a different story.

For more details about the British adoption of the Gregorian calendar see The British Switch to the Gregorian Calendar. For a broader view of calendar reform in general go to the Home Page for Calendar Reform.

Now for the Quaker wrinkle in time. Quakers would not use pagan names. Therefore, until 1753, they called March 1st month, April 2nd month, ... December 10th month, January 11th month, and February 12th month. For example, the date given for William Harvey's birth, 5th 9th mo. 1678, means 05 Nov 1678 (not 05 Sep 1678). Of course, every thing gets very simple beginning in 1753 when 1st month is January, 2nd month is February, and so on.
